Author: Paul Caruana Galizia
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1137565985
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 391
Book Description
This book provides the first wide-ranging account of the Maltese economy in the modern era, from colonialism to European Union membership. It sets arguments about growth and development, and the impact and legacy of colonization, against detailed histories of agriculture, manufacturing and trade, and different economic policy regimes. It is based on volumes of newly collected archival evidence and the latest thinking in economic history. By extending coverage up to the present, the book explains how one of the world's smallest nation-states achieved lasting economic development, quintupling its per capita income level since 1970, when many other postcolonial and advanced economies stagnated.

Social and Economic Policy in Malta. A Discussion of the Social Security System in the Maltese Islands
Author: Kimberley Bartolo
Publisher: GRIN Verlag
ISBN: 3346438430
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 13
Book Description
Submitted Assignment from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 80.00, University of Malta (Department of Social Policy), course: B.A. (Hons) Social Wellbeing Studies, language: English, abstract: The social security system is aimed towards supporting residents by providing them with financial support as well as maintaining their overall wellbeing and protecting them from poverty. In the Maltese scenario this system is regulated under Chapter 318 of the Laws of Malta. Social security benefits are important in society as they support residents and vulnerable groups from becoming financially deprived. Yet, I personally feel that more monitoring needs to be adopted in order to ensure that such benefits are really going to people who need them rather than to those who do not. The government spends a lot of money in this area and residents contribute to be entitled for certain benefits, so it is important to ensure that the right people are receiving these benefits.

Book Description
This paper reviews economic developments in Malta during 1990–95. The paper presents an overview of some of the main structural policies and describes recent developments in the domestic economy. It notes that, whereas policies have favored private initiative, the government has retained a significant presence in the economy both through its direct control of resources and through an active industrial policy. The policy mix has helped to accentuate certain trends in the structure of output since 1987: in particular, the importance of services has continued to grow at the expense of manufacturing.
