Book Description
Strategies to control dryland seep are aimed at lowering or eliminating the high water table, thus reducing the capillary water movement to the surface. To evaluate the feasibility of vegetative controls, a study was carried out in southern Alberta to determine the economic feasibility and physical performance of flexible cropping and alfalfa to control dryland salinity. Water table well depths and measures of salinity were also recorded. Nineteen producers with at least four years of economic data each were divided into the geographical areas of Barons-Champion, northwest of Lethbridge, Taber-Bow Island, east of Lethbridge, and Warner-Milk River, south of Lethbridge and the costs and returns for each field were evaluated.

Book Description
We have always had land in which the agricultural productivity is limited because there is not enough moisture. Systems of farming and burning often degrade dryland further until it is desert. Today, however, the problem is becoming much more serious. Over 20 per cent of the world's population lives in dryland areas, and unless action is taken drylands will increase dramatically. This book focuses on the people who live and .farm in the drylands, their use of land resources and the economic returns from their decisions. In a clear and thorough economic appraisal, the authors show how it is still possible to arrest the problem. Originally published in 1989
