Modeling the Ecological Niche and Potential Spread of the Eastern Fox Squirrel in California and Projecting Its Impacts on the Western Gray Squirrel
Author: Rosemary Garcia
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781369513066
Category : Conservation biology
Languages : en
Pages : 252
Book Description
The main goals of this study were to determine the distribution and model the niche of the invasive Eastern Fox Squirrel, Sciurus niger, which will be abbreviated as EFS, and project its potential impact on the Western Gray Squirrel, Sciurus griseus, which will be abbreviated as WGS, in California. Location data were gathered from a variety of sources, such as museum specimens, wildlife rehabilitation center records, roadkill databases, Department of Public Health records, and online research-grade personal observations. Current distribution maps were created with ArcMap software, and ecological niche models were created using MaxEnt software. EFS continues to expand its range from initial points of introduction across the state, and is expected to extend its geographic range to cover a substantial portion of California, and also overlap with native habitat of WGS.
