Book Description
Stemborers are a major group of insect pests of cereals in Africa and Asia. They aggravate food insecurity of farmers. Non-chemical based pest management systems are advocated. Borer distribution and importance, effects of soil fertility, of indigenous cropping systems, and of planting times on borers were studied in two ecozones, i.e., the cool-humid and semi-arid regions of the Amhara State of Ethiopia. Chilo partellus, Busseola fusca, Sesamia calamistis, and a coleopterous borer, Rhynchaenus niger were found. The wasp Cotesia flavipes parasitized C. partellus. Unidentified nematodes parasitized medium sized B. fusca larvae. Increasing levels of N fertilizer increased borer density, plant growth, borer damage and grain yield (up to 74%) on sorghum. Grain losses decreased linearly from 49% at no fertilizer level to 36% at the highest N level. Intercropping maize with mustard (Brassica carinata Braun) lowered B. fusca numbers. Increasing soil nutrients increased borer attack, but also improved plant vigor, resulting in a net benefit for the plant and the grain yield. This book is ideal for pest managers, researchers, university professors and rural development workers.

Book Description
An assemblage of approximately twenty moth species belonging to the families Crambidae, Pyralidae and Noctuidae constitute the most important cereal pests in many parts of Africa. The caterpillars of these moths bore into the stems of maize, sorghum, millet and rice, often killing the plant, and are commonly known as stem or stalk borers. The cereals attacked are grown on small farms to feed the farmers and their families and are of great importance as the staple food for the population in most parts of Africa. Complex control measures, including the use of chemicals, are often inappropriate. This book provides the information necessary for pursuing integrated pest management of African cereal stem borers, in particular strategies using natural enemy components. The book begins by characterizing the economically important species by region and by their biology and host plants. The book then describes in detail the taxonomy and rearing techniques for the moths, their larvae and their natural enemies. It includes illustrated keys of species and lists of distributions and hosts, and it concludes with a summary of current control measures and those being investigated.

Book Description
Pests Control and Acarology presents novel methods adopted in pest management for cereal crops and fruit trees. Each chapter was written by experts in their respective areas, and provides a rigorous review and outline of current trends and future needs, to expedite progress in the field. The book was structured in three sections as follows. The first section introduces the topics and defines concepts of Integrated Pest Management and Biological Control. The second section includes two chapters: the first one discusses a new trap barrier system for rodent pest control in rice and the second one presents methods used in the management of stem borers in cereal crops. The third section presents various topics within the area of Acarology.

Book Description
Annotation. A major concern for biological control has always been the risk of indirect unwanted effects on the ecology of other organisms. Our understanding of the ecological and evolutionary processes underlying these effects has until now been limited, and experimental methods are sometimes lacking. This book presents the key papers form the first International Organization for Biological Control global symposium, held in Montpellier, France in October 1999. It addresses the issues and concerns involved in biological control, and assesses the current status of evaluation of the ecologicaleffects.

Book Description
Ecological engineering is about manipulating farm habitats, making them less favourable for pests and more attractive to beneficial insects. Though they have received far less research attention and funding, ecological approaches may be safer and more sustainable than their controversial cousin, genetic engineering. This book brings together contributions from international workers leading the fast moving field of habitat manipulation, reviewing the field and paving the way towards the development and application of new pest management approaches. Chapters explore the frontiers of ecological engineering methods including molecular approaches, high tech marking and remote sensing. They also review the theoretical aspects of this field and how ecological engineering may interact with genetic engineering. The technologies presented offer opportunities to reduce crop losses to insects while reducing the use of pesticides and providing potentially valuable habitat for wildlife conservation. With contributions from the USA, UK, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Kenya and Israel, this book provides comprehensive coverage of international progress towards sustainable pest management.

Book Description
Biological Control: Global Impacts, Challenges and Future Directions of Pest Management provides a historical summary of organisms and main strategies used in biological control, as well as the key challenges confronting biological control in the 21st century. Biological control has been implemented for millennia, initially practised by growers moving beneficial species from one local area to another. Today, biological control has evolved into a formal science that provides ecosystem services to protect the environment and the resources used by humanity. With contributions from dedicated scientists and practitioners from around the world, this comprehensive book highlights important successes, failures and challenges in biological control efforts. It advocates that biological control must be viewed as a global endeavour and provides suggestions to move practices forward in a changing world. Biological Control is an invaluable resource for conservation specialists, pest management practitioners and those who research invasive species, as well as students studying pest management science.
