Book Description
Excerpt from The Lamp of Lothian, or the History of Haddington: In Connection With the Public Affairs of East Lothian and of Scotland From the Earliest Records to the Present Period William appears to have been pacified for a short time by a grant of the earldom of Huntington, for which he did homage to the younger Henry as the vassal of England, and afterwards re signed it to his brother David, who performed the ceremonies of the vassal on the same occasion. The Prince of England having taken up arms against his father in 1173, William joined his standard, for which he received a grant of the long contested earldom of Northumberland as far as the southern Tyne, while David was rewarded with the earldom of Cambridge. The grants of a rebellious prince, however, are of no moment. After invading England, and laying siege to Werk and Carlisle without effect, William returned from a fruitless devastation, and like an um bitions soldier of fortune of the present day, brought the invaded into his own country, who laid waste the lowlands of Scotland. Book Description
Excerpt from Reminiscences and Notices of Ten Parishes of the County of Haddington P. Ronaldson, Esq., c.a., Edinburgh (mr Martine's executor), kindly placed the ms. In my hands. After examining it I found that it required some revision. Had he lived Mr Martine would undoubtedly have gone over the ms. Another time before sending it to the press. The work of revision was very kindly undertaken by Mr E. J. Wilson, Schoolhouse, Bolton, who is well-known as an antiquarian, and has now shown himself to have been eminently fitted for this task. The accounts of the parishes written by Mr Martine have very wisely been allowed to appear in his own inimitable style - quaint, almost obsolete, expressions being retained, which give a finer zest, and, to the modern reader, an original flavour reminiscent of the winter fireside of the homely farm-houses of East Lothian, while at the same time they instruct and delight. The revision has been limited to some corrections in fact, and additions which seemed to be interesting. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Gateway of Scotland: Or East Lothian, Lammermoor and the Merse That the south-eastern corner of Scotland, or, in broad terms, the country between Berwick and Edinburgh, is as a whole the most historically interesting region in the northern kingdom, no one, I presume, will deny. Its geographical situation has virtually entailed upon it this distinction since recorded history began. Nor, having regard to the past as well as to the present, can any objection be urged against the title of this book. But it is not mainly for this reason that after some summers of rambling on the English Marches to the south of it, I have ventured to cross the Tweed, a liberty which I trust will be forgiven an Englishman by my readers in the north. For this little enterprise might with truth be designated a revisitation rather than a fresh departure. Indeed the reminiscent note so frequently sounded in these pages might almost call for some apology if it were not for the hope that occasional glimpses into another and widely different day might peradventure prove of some interest to a younger generation, even of Scotsmen. Moreover, it is at least noteworthy that so far as I know no appreciation by pen or pencil in book form of this distinguished and inspiring region - certainly no recent or accessible one - exists from which those who care to may gather something of it.
