Book Description
In the rapidly evolving airline industry, new technologies play an increasingly critical role in the delivery of real and perceived value in reducing costs, enhancing revenue, and improving customer service and customer safety/security. This book focuses at a senior executive level, examining the key forces affecting the airline business and their potential in terms of short and long-term strategies. The author discusses the role of emerging technology on the airline industry, defined very broadly and including computers, information, databases, aircraft, telecommunications, Internet, wireless, speech recognition, face recognition, etc. His argument is that technology should not only be an enabler of business strategy but crucially the driver of business strategy. The central theme is the vital interaction between technology and business strategy across a wide spectrum of functions - executives sharing their insights of what is needed in terms of revolutions in consumers, technologies, and productivities. What has held airlines back are not so much legacy systems but legacy mindsets, organizational structures and processes, as well as the intelligent selection, investments, and implementation of value-adding technologies. The book is the outcome of the author's own experience while working with a number of airlines and his participation in many discussions with practitioners in the airline and technology firms.

Book Description
This book focuses on the factors that support the strengths of international airlines in general and the Asian airline carriers in particular. Defining the quality of human capital as the level of education and the competence of airline employees, it analyzes the efficiency of 39 airlines in various regions, both in terms of production and cost structures. It argues that, despite Asia’s well-developed and globally competitive manufacturing sector, aided by open market practices, its overall service sector still lags far behind more advanced economies. As this does not stop Asia-based carriers from generally being more efficient than their counterparts in Europe and North America, the book investigates how competitiveness analysis of the airline industry can help Asian policymakers better prepare for the liberalization of the service sector, given how crucial this aspect is for the future growth of the Asia-Pacific region. Efficiency and Competitiveness of International Airlines offers a valuable resource for policymakers, airline employees, and researchers and students of microeconomics.

Book Description
Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, , language: English, abstract: The purpose of this paper is to research how mobile services impact the interaction between airlines and passengers. The paper begins with a PEST analysis of the European airline industry and focuses on technological changes. It continues with a SWOT analysis of Lufthansa, where we interlink mobile technology as a platform which could reduce costs for the airline. In-depth research on mobile services and their impact on the interaction between airlines and passengers is performed by evaluating different mobile services along Lufthansa's value chain, namely the airline's activities in operations, outbound logistics and marketing and sales. We claim that the interaction through mobile services is limited to one-way interaction, where airlines embrace the mobile services to perform cost reduction along their value chain, and neither offer two-way interaction with their passengers nor asking them to co-create the brand or the product. The current wireless mobile services are already offered via the internet, and allow a better and direct service for passengers. Mobile services are necessary for airlines, so they are not seen as out of date, but it does not mean that having mobile services contributes to having a competitive advantage. On the contrary, not having mobile services results in strategic disadvantage.

Book Description
A Brookings Institution Press, Berkeley Roundtable on the International Economy, and the Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation publication This book rests on the proposition that the information techology revolution of the last ten years marks the beginning of a fundamental economic transformation. This transformation will affect every activity in which organization, information processing, or communication is important. It may well require changes in ideas about ownership, property, and control--the way in which governments regulate economies in the broadest sense of that term. The e-commerce transformation presents remarkable opportunities for businesses, governments, and other organizations to remake themselves, recreate what it is that they can do, and reconstruct their relationships with customers, citizens, and constituents. A project of the Berkeley Roundtable on the International Economy (BRIE) and the Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC), this volume analyzes the way this transformation will affect market structure and pricing models in several major industries: retail financial services, air travel, music, automobiles, semiconductors, hearing instruments, food, textiles, and trucking.
