Book Description
Excerpt from Dynamos and Electric Motors and All About Them Practically a dynamo or an electric motor, electrically consists of three parts, the field, the armature and the commutator. The field consists of magnets, which are iron cores solidly connected with an iron frame. Upon the magnets are wound layers of insulated wire. These magnets are called electro-magnets, as they become magnetic only when there is an electric current passing through their coils. The armature may consist of a soft iron core mounted upon a shaft which revolves within the fields or it may be a stationary part around which the fields revolve. To the soft iron core of the armature a number of insulated copper wires are affixed with their ends connected to the segments of the commutator. Book Description
Excerpt from Designs for Small Dynamos and Motors Most of the chapters of this book originally formed articles written for the American Electrician, and many of them were published in the book entitled Electrical Designs. Chapters X to XVIII inclusive, however, have not previously appeared in book form, and all of the direct-current designs herein described have been revised in accordance with the changes in the practice of dynamo and motor design which have occurred since their first publication. The majority of the designs were prepared with a View of reducing to the simplest degree the facilities necessary for the construction of the machines, rather than to secure the most graceful outlines or best efficiency. Chapters XIX to XXII inclusive describe designs by Mr. J. C. Brock smith which were previously described in issues of the American Electrician that are now out of print. These were also reprinted in Electrical Designs, which is superseded by the present book and three others now in press. The other volumes are devoted, one to electrical instruments, telephones and similar light constructions, another to heavier electrical apparatus other than dynamos and stationary motors, and the third to gas engines and other machinery not involving electrical construction. These volumes will contain all of the material that appeared in Electrical Designs, excepting that contained by the present book, together with much additional matter not heretofore printed in book form. Book Description
Excerpt from Dynamos and Electric Motors: How to Make and Run Them With Numerous Engravings and Diagrams There are many who believe that electricity actually runs, or flows, from one end of a wire or conductor to the other, in a certain direction, when the ends are connected to a battery or dynamo. For instance, in the case of a battery of primary cells, the current is always spoken of as coming from the carbon terminal, going through the external circuit, and returning to the zinc. This, in point of fact, is misleading for the expres sion is quite conventional, and it might easily have been expmd the other way, and would have made no difference whatever to electrical formula or laws. But when electricity came to be studied and advance was made in the science, it was mutually agreed to express the phenomenon in this way. In a similar manner it was agreed to call one end of a magnet the north pole, and the other the south but in this case we are brought face to face with a paradox. It is this: either we have all along been giving our magnet ends wrong. Names, or else Franklin, and many others after him, have diligently been searching the Arctic Seas for the North Pole when it is the south all the time; for like poles repel each other, unlike poles attract. Perhaps it has been noticed that many writers are careful in calling the two ends of a magnet the north-seeking and south-seeking poles respectively. Book Description
Excerpt from The Practical Management of Dynamos and Motors The purpose of these articles is to set forth the more im portant facts Which present themselves in the actual hand ing of dynamo-electric machines and electric motors, as a guide for those Who use or study these machines. The authors do not claim for this treatment of the subject that it is anything more than a set of directions in which the various points are arranged under headings for convenience of reference. The subjects considered are Chapter I, General Princi ples of Dynamos and Motors; Chapter II, Directions for Selecting Chapter III, Installing Chapter IV, Starting Chapter V, Running; Chapter VI, Stopping and Chap ter VII, Testing Dynamos and Motors; also Part II, Directions for Locating and Remedying Troubles in these machines.
