Anglers themselves are a heterogeneous group, and they interact with a diversity of fishing opportunities across a diversity of social-ecological contexts. The objective of my dissertation was to study angler satisfaction, a key consideration in the management of recreational fisheries, and angler behaviour across these sources of diversity. First, I performed a meta-analysis of angler satisfaction to study the catch and non-catch related determinants of recreational angler satisfaction. The aggregated effect sizes revealed that catch-related (i.e., catch rate, size of largest fish caught, fish harvested) components were more strongly related to angling satisfaction than non-catch related components (e.g., environmental quality). Following the meta-analysis, I used existing angler diary data from contrasting social-ecological contexts in Germany to explore how catch satisfaction and catch et release behaviour varied, and how they may be moderated by situational and social-ecological characteristics. This research revealed that the importance of catch outcomes towards catch satisfaction varied across angler types (i.e., angler specialization), situational, and social-ecological contexts. Similarly, I found that harvest behaviours also varied significantly across these sources of diversity. Altogether, my doctoral research supports the assertion that recreational fisheries researchers need to account for diversity across angler types, situational contexts, and social-ecological contexts. Work that fails to account for these sources of diversity will have the potential to mislead fisheries managers or reduce faith in human dimensions research within recreational fisheries.

Recreational fisheries are complex social ecological systems, where fish populations, recreational anglers, and management agencies interact across scales to produce emergent outcomes. Because of their large spatial scales and complex interactions, it is difficult for recreational fisheries managers to anticipate and respond to social and ecological change. The success of any management action, such as setting new regulations or supplementing fish populations through stocking, pivots on the behavioral responses of anglers. Anglers can move across a fishery landscape as fishing opportunities change, communicate with other fishers, and otherwise adjust their behavior to maintain their catch and/or harvest opportunities. In this dissertation, I developed and tested a method for efficiently monitoring fishing effort across lake-rich landscapes. A statistical modeling approach was an effective strategy for integrating multiple data sources to produce estimates of fishing effort across greater spatial and temporal scales. Next, I investigated the response of recreational anglers' fishing effort to social, regulatory, and environmental change in Wisconsin and New Jersey. By applying a statistical model-based approach to monitoring fishing effort in Wisconsin, I identified increases in the use of lakes on public lands associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Next, by analyzing changes in angler numbers reported by for-hire vessels in New Jersey, I was able to identify responses to shorter seasons and lower possession limits in different sectors of the for-hire marine recreational fishery. Finally, in Wisconsin, where past data on fishing effort was not readily available, I used a stated preference method to anticipate future responses of anglers to tradeoffs in availability of coolwater and warmwater species as climate change progresses. In each of these fisheries, understanding and anticipating substitution behavior of anglers among sites and fish species is key for effective fisheries management under ecological and social change.
