"The past four decades show significant increase in number of marriages between Black men and non-Black women, and decline in marriage overall for Black women (Crowder and Tolnay 2000; Raley, Sweeney, and Wondra 2015). This retreat from marriage by Black women has been explored focusing on deficits in the number of available partners, but the role of racial intermarriage has been widely ignored. Factors attributed to exchange within Black communities include increase of economic autonomy and higher collective educational attainment of Black women and minimal employment opportunities, mass incarceration, and lower educational attainment of Black men (Crowder and Tolnay 2000; Raley, Sweeney, and Wondra, 2015). While literature supports this change, little has been done to investigate framing images and discourse circulated through digital media spaces. I argue that contemporary patterns of Black American mate-selection are influenced by digital social media entities (re)enforcing negative notions of Black American womanhood, leading Black men to avoid them as romantic partners. The goal of my research is two-fold. First, I propose to utilize digital social media space, namely Instagram, to identify common themes that influence perceptions of beauty, desirability, and the potential of romantic partnerships in young Black American communities. Second, I will discuss social and psychological implications and long-term effects which accompany the shunning of Black American women through digital media spaces. In doing the latter, I investigate historical and modern typecasts ascribed to Black American womanhood, and possible effects of long term negative framing of African Americans (Black women particularly) on the mate selection process. Through this historical analysis I study this phenomenon through a lens of the past, and one of the future to create awareness about historical origin and future implications. I expect that negative ascribed characteristics often depicted in social media are internalized by the community and function to influence the mate selection processes within it. I will discuss implications of heavy social media usage for Black American women especially, and ideas for combatting negative effects on younger Black female generations' self esteem and empowerment in writing narratives reflecting true lived experience. My research assumes that without positive ascriptions of Black women or "alternative" narratives from social media entities, future generations of Black Americans will make romantic decisions with a skewed view of themselves and those they choose to select or reject."--Abstract from author supplied metadata

Why is it that successful black men--black men who are "at the top of their game" in the arts, entertainment, politics and athletics--are four times as apt to be married to or dating a woman who is not an African American than they were only thirty years ago? And why are twice as many black men involved in interracial relationships as black women? In addition to their celebrity status, which includes widespread popularity and wealth, black men from Charles Barkley to James Earl Jones to Russell Simmons to Bryant Gumbel share something else in common; something that also characterizes the experiences of more than 250,000 less well-known black men in the United States. They happen to be involved in interracial intimate relationships. Less than fifty years ago such relationships were next to impossible, leading to severe social sanctions. The fact that this is no longer the case is concrete evidence of changes in the quality and character of contemporary race relations. Drawing on her own observations, and her examination of the responses of a small, diverse group of black men who date (in some cases exclusively), have sexual relations with, and marry women who are not of African descent, the book provides insight into the continuing ways that race and ethnic status affect the choices people make in their lives. Until this book, though, these types of relationships have received scant serious attention. Craig-Henderson forthrightly addresses the taboo, interspersing analysis with verbatim accounts from black men involved in such relationships. Grounded in serious research, interviews, and analysis of census data, Black Men in Interracial Relationships examines why such relationships appear to be so popular among black male elites. According to the most recent U.S. census, twice as many black men are involved in interracial relationships as black women. Do black women consciously resist such involvement? What motivates the relatively few women who are in these types of relationships? And how do they navigate the unfamiliar terrain in intimacy? One of the most popular explanations for black women's involvement in interracial intimacy is the unavailability of eligible black men. This explanation focuses on the dismal statistics popularly discussed in reports that forecast lonely futures for African American females. Craig-Henderson explores another, more provocative explanation. She argues that some black women may disassociate from larger social stereotypes by consciously and strategically making choices that distance them from what is considered characteristic of the "typical" African American woman. Scant serious attention has focused upon intimate interracial relationships, perhaps because of a general reluctance to deal with two extremely provocative issues: race and sex. As rates of interracial relationships continue to increase, discussions about interracial intimacy are relevant and timely. Craig-Henderson considers the continuing taboo of interracial relationships involving African Americans, the way this taboo is changing, and the way that contemporary race relations perpetuate longstanding stereotypes about race and sex. Interracial marriages between African Americans and Caucasian Americans in the United States are the least common of all interracial marriages, with marriages between black women and white men being the less frequent of the two combinations. Since the 1990s, however, increasing numbers of black women have been marrying white men. This book examines the dynamics of race, social class and marriage in contemporary American society specifically with respect to marriages between African Americans and Caucasian Americans, comparing and contrasting the experiences of couples in both intermarriage patterns. Despite being the focus of extensive sociological and psychological research during the latter half of the twentieth century, most research on black-white intermarriage focused on African American men who married white women. Sociological research focused on the deviant nature of these marriages while psychological research focused on various pathologies attributed to couples who crossed the color line to marry. Little research was directed towards marriages between African American women and white men with even less attention given to delineating differences in the two black-white marital pairings. As marriages between African American women and white men have become more common, it is important to understand why this trend has emerged and how this marriage type differs from the more prevalent African American man, white woman marriage combination. This book is one of the first published on interracial marriages which focuses specifically on marriages between African American women and Caucasian American men in contemporary America. The author examines the historical, social, and legal contexts from which these marriages emerged while demonstrating how the race and sex of each partner is important to understanding how the marriage is socially experienced.
