Arnold Huijgen analyses und assesses the idea of divine accommodation in John Calvin's theology. He proves that Calvin's idea of accommodation was terminologically influenced by Erasmus, while its content originated in patristic theology. Though Calvin's idea of accommodation is multifaceted, Huijgen subsumes and analyzes it in the light of the two main perspectives of pedagogy and revelation. The pedagogical aspect relates to Calvin's understanding of salvation history, and the relation between the Old and the New Testament. In this perspective Christ as the mediator holds a central position. The aspect of revelation focuses on Calvin's comprehension of God's nature which for him is behind God's revelation. Calvin's understanding of accommodation implies a distinct dynamic to revelation, which is disrupted by its static, hierarchical ontology. Huijgen points out the weaknesses of Calvin's idea of accommodation on the basis of modern critiques by Karl Barth, Isaak August Dorner, and Harry M. Kuitert; he also explores the viable points for present day theology.

Theologians since Justin Martyr and Irenius have employed the concept of accommodation to explain how an infinite God reveals himself and his will to finite and fallen creatures. God condescends to the human level to communicate and interact with humans in ways appropriate to humans. God, as a perfect being, has chosen to adapt to the created limitations and the sinful weaknesses of people. The church fathers and Calvin argue that God accommodates out of love for his creatures. Since there is much misinformation concerning accommodation, there is a need to understand the concept in light of grammatical-historical hermeneutics and biblical theology. The principal problem with accommodation is the difficulty of determining the extent of accommodation in Scripture. The lack of any unifying principle has led theologians to choose rather arbitrarily what they consider to be accommodated in Scripture. This dissertation has three purposes: it establishes Calvin's place as a representative of the historical view of accommodation, it evaluates John Calvin's use of accommodation in light of grammatical-historical hermeneutics and biblical theology, and it proposes a biblical theology for accommodation. This dissertation attempts first to demonstrate that Calvin's view is sufficiently similar to that of some church fathers. Then, the dissertation analyzes the extent to which accommodation as it appears in Calvin's works is compatible with grammatical-historical hermeneutics and biblical theology. Finally, the dissertation undertakes to formulate biblical theological proposals for accommodation. --

If Christians are part of the one body of Christ, how do we account theologically for the multiple expressions of our common faith? If God is ultimate truth, why is it so difficult to agree on issues related to truth? Must we sacrifice a commitment to truth in favor of a pragmatic unity in the church? ‘Quid est sacramentum?’ Visual Representation of Sacred Mysteries in Early Modern Europe, 1400–1700 investigates how sacred mysteries (in Latin, sacramenta or mysteria) were visualized in a wide range of media, including illustrated religious literature such as catechisms, prayerbooks, meditative treatises, and emblem books, produced in Italy, France, and the Low Countries between ca. 1500 and 1700. In order to reconcile the discrepancies between ancient and modern cosmology, confessional scholars from every viewpoint on the interpretation of the early chapters of Genesis agree that God accommodated language to finite human understanding. But in the history of interpretation, no consensus has emerged regarding what accommodation entails at the linguistic level. More precise consideration of how the ancient cognitive environment functions in the informative intention of the divine and human authors is necessary. Not only does relevance theory validate interpretative options that are inherently most probable within the primary communication situation, but the application of relevance theory can also help disentangle the complexities of dual authorship inherent in any model of accommodation. The results also make a salutary contribution to the theological reading of Scripture.
