Book Description
Biogeography is the study of the geographic distribution of organisms. Biogeographers seek to understand ecological processes (e.g. climatic stability and effect of area) that influence the distribution of living organisms over short periods of time and to uncover events occurring in the distant past (e.g. continental drift and evolution) which have resulted in the geographic distribution observed today. The Earth s surface consists of a mosaic of rigid plates, each moving relative to adjacent plates. A large super-continent pangea split into smaller fragments about 200-300 million years ago. These then drifted apart to form the present arrangement of continents. The most important factors today that influence the life of birds, as well as of all other organisms, relate to human activities in general, and to habitat destruction and climate change in particular. Africa and its associated islands have over 1,300 Important Bird Areas for the conservation of bird populations.

Book Description
Birds of Africa South of the Sahara provides unrivalled coverage of African birds in a single volume, and is the first book to describe and illustrate all of the birds found in Africa south of the Sahara Desert (the Afrotropic Region), including Socotra, Pemba and islands in the Gulf of Guinea. * Some 2,105 species are covered, with an additional 70 vagrants briefly described, and more than 2,000 images assembled on 359 plates. * Illustrations portray most distinctive plumages, as well as diagnostic flight patterns and major geographic variants. * Species descriptions give precise identification features, highlighting differences between similar species, as well as briefly reporting habitat, status and calls. * Distribution maps for each species are based on the latest atlas surveys. * The most up-to-date taxonomy is used, with many new species described and illustrated for the first time. Despite its exceptional coverage, this guide is compact enough to use in the field, and follows the standard field guide format, with texts and range maps appearing opposite the color plates.

Cameroon, thanks to its variety of habitats, is blessed with an impressive biodiversity. Birds are no exception and close to 1,000 species are known to occur in Cameroon.0A leading expert in Cameroon ornithology, the author has searched for records from literature and scientific reports published since 1900, and has added thousands of personal observations to build a database of over 67,000 records. For the first time ever, this book gives individual distribution maps for each of the 954 species accepted in the Cameroon list. Accompanying these maps, a short account summarises the status and distribution of each species, providing a wealth of scientific references.0This titanic work also provides useful insight on current gaps in knowledge and points to research and surveys that are needed to improve the general and specific knowledge of the fascinating avifauna of Cameroon.

Book Description
This new field guide uses all 147 color plates from Princeton's A Guide to the Birds of Western Africa, with concise, authoritative text on facing pages, to create a compact, lightweight field reference covering all 1,285 species found in the region--from Senegal and southern Mauritania east to Chad and the Central African Republic and south to Congo. It is the first field guide to cover this region exclusively and in such comprehensive depth, and will enable birders to identify any species found in any of the twenty-three countries and territories covered. Birds of Western Africa also has an updated color distribution map for each species, conveniently placed on interleaved pages within the color plates. The plates, all original and painted by the same leading illustrator, comprise over 3,000 figures--including a number of new images painted for this field guide--and depict almost all the species described. The entries opposite the plates focus on key identification marks for all main plumages. Both authors have gained extensive field experience over many years in western Africa. Their knowledge and expertise shines through in this unprecedented and outstanding field guide to one of the world's most exciting birding regions.
