Book Description
In seeking to understand village evacuation in the Kurdistan region of Turkey in the 1980s and 1990s, this book focuses on the spatial aspects of the armed conflict. It tries to explain how settlement and resettlement policies and practices in Turkey have been part of a larger project of political and cultural engineering, based on a revision of a classical understanding of modernity as reflected in the work of Durkheim, Mauss, and Tönnies. This interdisciplinary perspective has allowed contributions from sociology to the political sciences and from history to social geography.

Book Description
Laurel Rose analyzes how traditional ruling elites in Swaziland, as in other parts of Africa, use harmony ideologies to downplay and resolve land disputes. Such disputes could be used by foreign development agents or indigenous new elites as justification for implementing land tenure changes, including a reduction of traditional elites' power based upon land control. Swazi commoners accept the cultural value and legitimacy of most harmony ideologies, but they adopt various strategies when disputing about particular land rights in order to produce more favorable outcomes. This book is unusual in its focus on political rather than economic dimensions of land tenure and disputes. It searches for links between individual concerns with land use rights and national concerns with land policy. It also examines gender and leadership issues associated with land, showing how women and new elites threaten land interests of men and traditional leaders.

Book Description
This book explains the growth of secular law in a Middle East nation, revealing it to be the product of elite competition over control of the state, a competition the secular elites won in Turkey when Ataturk set up the new Republic. The author demonstrates the great extent to which secularism dominates the discourse of Turkish conflict resolution by the mid-1960s. Her work exemplifies the uses of empirical field research set within a historical context.

Book Description
The Middle East is a region of great traditional diversity, which has been characterized by immense political, social and economic changes, still developing over thirty years after the title’s original publication. A group of oil-rich countries have achieved great political significance and some of the highest per capita incomes in the world. Much modern development has been spatially polarized, accentuating the concentrations of rapidly growing populations and posing severe problems for planners. Cultivation and pastoralism, the main traditional activities, have often suffered from neglect and insufficient investment, and both require re-evaluation. These are the issues addressed by this volume, first published in 1981, which contains a series of overviews and case studies written by present or former members of staff and research students of the Department of Geography in the University of Durham in honour of W.B. Fisher. Change and Development in the Middle East provides an interesting and relevant geographical and demographic analysis of this diverse and volatile region.
