Excerpt from Diseases of the Tongue Ever since I have been a member of the staff of St. Bartholomew's Hospital, I have used the opportunities which the large out-patient practice of the Hospital has given me of collecting notes and drawings of diseases of the tongue. I did not do so at first with any definite intention of publishing them, and certainly not with any intention of writing a work on Diseases of the Tongue. When, however, I was asked by Messrs. Cassell and Company to undertake this task, I accepted, on account of the opportunity it afforded me of bringing my material before the profession much more thoroughly than would probably have been the case had I published the book independently. In addition to my own cases, I have had the advantage of observing many cases under the care of my colleagues in the Hospital, and have even been permitted to have drawings made of those which I desired. Some of these drawings have been lithographed; but the very large majority of the illustrations have been taken from cases which have been under my own care. When Sir James Paget learned what work I was engaged in, he was good enough to interest himself in it so far as to look out for me his manuscript notes of several cases, among them one of tuberculous ulcer of the tongue taken about thirty years ago. Excerpt from The Tongue as an Indication in Disease: Being the Lumleian Lectures Delivered at the Royal College of Physicians in March 1888 These Lectures are published as delivered, with only a few alterations, chiefly verbal. I had intended to have begun them with a brief notice of what had been written on the subject of which they treat, but was compelled by the pressure of other matters to limit myself to the few necessary references which are to be found in the text. I now prefix such a sketch as I had designed. It does not pretend to exhaust the literature of the subject, but rather to give specimens of the views held at different times. Excerpt from The Diseases of the Mouth in Children (Non-Surgical) It is difficult to find a subject in diseases of children upon which so much confusion exists as upon the above. There are many reasons for this. The historical development of the subject has been slow; indeed, very little clearing has been done up to within the last fifteen or twenty years; then, a term first used by Hippocrates (aphthae) has caused considerable confusion. Finally, these forms of disease have suffered, in common with all diseases of children, on account of inattention, consequently lack of observation, or observation made in the direction of some preconceived view or theory only. Hippocrates and Galen and their followers first used the term aphthae, and, by degrees, every trouble that took place in the mouth was called aphthous. The distinctions and subdivisions made were in some instances simply ludicrous. It was not until the time of Bretonneau that diphtheritic sore mouth was separated from aphthae, and some authors drew their lines of subdivision so finely that they could make a great number of varieties of aphthae (16 Sagar). The result of this was that everything was so completely confused that one writer failed to understand the other. Even if our present textbooks are carefully examined into, notably those on practice, it will be seen how lamentably weak, in nearly all instances, the chapter or chapters on the diseases of the mouth are, the omissions not to be taken into consideration at all.
