Book Description
We present the first calculation of direct photon production at next-to-next-to leading order (NNLO) accuracy in QCD. For this process, although the final state cuts mandate only the presence of a single electroweak boson, the underlying kinematics resembles that of a generic vector boson plus jet topology. In order to regulate the infrared singularities present at this order we use the $N$-jettiness slicing procedure, applied for the first time to a final state that at Born level includes colored partons but no required jet. We compare our predictions to ATLAS 8 TeV data and find that the inclusion of the NNLO terms in the perturbative expansion, supplemented by electroweak corrections, provides an excellent description of the data with greatly reduced theoretical uncertainties.

Book Description
This thesis reports on the first studies of Standard Model photon production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) using the ATLAS detector. Standard Model photon production is a large background in the search for Higgs bosons decaying into photon pairs, and is thus critical to understand. The thesis explains the techniques used to reconstruct and identify photon candidates using the ATLAS detector, and describes a measurement of the production cross section for isolated prompt photons. The thesis also describes a search for the Higgs boson in which the analysis techniques used in the measurement are exploited to reduce and estimate non-prompt backgrounds in diphoton events.

Book Description
This volume reviews the physics studied at the CERN proton-antiproton collider during its first phase of operation, from the first physics run in 1981 to the last one at the end of 1985.The volume consists of a series of review articles written by physicists who are actively involved with the collider research program. The first article describes the proton-antiproton collider facility itself, including the antiproton source and its principle of operation based on stochastic cooling. The subsequent six articles deal with the various physics subjects studied at the collider. Each article describes in detail the experimental results on a particular subject, and also provides the theoretical framework necessary for their interpretation. Finally the last two articles discuss the physics expectations from the improved collider (the so-called ACOL program, which has just started operation), and also from the next generation of ?supercolliders? which are being considered both in Europe and in the United States America.

Book Description
A preliminary differential cross section d[sup 2][sigma]/d[sub pT]d[sub [eta]] for the inclusive production of direct photons, p[bar p] [yields] [gamma] + X, at [radical]s = 1.8 TeV is presented. Photon candidate events included in the cross section are in the transverse momentum range 14 [lt] pT [lt] 90 GeV/c and the pseudorapidity range [minus]0.9 [lt] [eta] [lt] 0.9. The estimate of the background in the photon candidate sample due to multi-photon sources is discussed. The data are compared with recent next-to-leading-order predictions.

Book Description
The Advanced Research Workshop on QeD Hard Hadronic Processes was held on 8-13 October 1987 at Hotel on the Cay, St. Croix, U. S. Virgin Islands. The underlying theme of the workshop, the first in a series, was an examination, both theoretical and experimental, of the state of understanding of Quantum Chromodynamics. Because of the pervasiveness of the strong interactions in all aspects of high energy physics, QCD is central to many problems in elementary particle physics. Therefore, this workshop was organized to provide a forum in which the theory Quantum Chromodynamics cou 1 d be confronted with experi ment. The workshop was organ i zed in four sessions, each of which concentrated on a major experimental arena in which a hard QCD process can be measured experimentally. A fifth session was rlevoted to global issues which effect all QCD processes. Each session began with a survey of the theoretical developments in the particular area and concluded with a round table which discussed the various information presented in the course of the discussions. A session of the workshop was devoted to the direct production of high transverse momentum photons in hadronic interactions. Data from several experiments, either completed or in progress at CERN (NA3, NA24, WA70, UA6, CCOR, R806, AFS, RllO, UA1 and UA2), were di scussed and the prospects for two new upcomi ng experi ments from Fermil ab (E-705, E-706) were presented.

Book Description
ABSTRACT: In this Thesis we present the Next-To-Leading-Order calculation, O(alpha alpha_s^2), of the inclusive cross section for a photon and a heavy quark (charm or bottom), p bar p / pp -> gamma +Q +X, (Q=c, b) at hadron colliders. We include fragmentation effects through the Next-To-Leading-Order. This calculation is performed with the use of a phase space slicing technique so that the effects of experimental cuts can be easily included. We study in detail the characteristics of this process at both the Tevatron and the LHC. Results for the ratios of the charm and bottom cross sections are presented and the systematics of the various subprocesses are compared and contrasted. The theory predictions are compared to experimental measurements from the DO collaboration at Fermilab. A brief overview of the LO massive calculation is also presented, and compared to the NLO massless case. We predict that the investigation of this process and our results will be relevant in the study of heavy quark PDFs at the LHC.
