The Early Diplomatic Relations Between the United States and Japan, 1853-1865 (Classic Reprint)
Author: Payson Jackson Treat
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781330882832
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 474
Book Description
Excerpt from The Early Diplomatic Relations Between the United States and Japan, 1853-1865 The invitation to deliver the Albert Shaw Lectures on Diplomatic History at the Johns Hopkins University afforded an opportunity to organize the first part of a more extensive study in which I have been engaged for a number of years. It is my hope to complete eventually a survey of the whole period of Japanese-American diplomatic relations. The present lectures take up the story with the beginnings of American intercourse, and continue it through the negotiation of the Perry and Harris treaties, into the period when, because of the Mikado's refusal to approve of the commercial conventions, the foreign relations of Japan became apparently inextricably involved with the turbulent domestic politics of that revolutionary era. The narrative ends with the Mikado's sanction of the treaties in 1865, one of the most important of all the events which occurred in the period between the real opening of Japan in 1859 and the war of the restoration in 1868. It is my pleasant duty to acknowledge here the gratitude owed to the friends and colleagues, in America and in Japan, who have given help and encouragement in these investigations. Their very number precludes individual mention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. American Multinationals and Japan
Author: Mark Mason
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 1684172934
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 400
Book Description
"This pioneering study of United States direct investment in Japan will interest academic specialists, business managers, and government policymakers in America, Japan, and elsewhere. Drawing on rich historical materials from both sides of the Pacific, including corporate records and government documents never before made public, Mason examines the development of both Japanese policy towards foreign investment and the strategic responses of American corporations. This history is related in part through original case studies of Coca-Cola, Dow Chemical, Ford, General Motors, International Business Machines, Motorola, Otis Elevator, Texas Instruments, Western Electric, and Victor Talking Machine. The book seeks to explain why s little foreign direct investment has entered modern Japan. In contrast to the widely held view that emphasizes an alleged lack of effort on the part of foreign corporations, this study finds that Japanese restrictions merit greater attention. Many analysts of the modern Japanese political economy identify the Japanese government as the key actor in initiating such restrictions. Mason finds that the influence of Japanese business has often proved more potent than these analysts suggest. This book offers fresh insights into both the operation of the modern Japanese political economy and of its relations with the world economy."

Historical Dictionary of U.S. Diplomacy from the Civil War to World War I
Author: Kenneth J. Blume
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 144227333X
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 597
Book Description
The period encompassed by this volume—with the start of the Civil War and World War I as bookends—has gone by a number of colorful names: The Imperial Years, The New American Empire, America’s Rise to World Power, Imperial Democracy, The Awkward Years, or Prelude to World Power, for example. A different organizing theme would describe the period as one in which a transformation took place in American foreign relations. But whatever developments or events historians have emphasized, there is general agreement that the period was one in which something changed in the American approach to the world. This second edition of Historical Dictionary of U.S. Diplomacy from the Civil War to World War I contains a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 1,000 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about diplomacy during this period.
