Este texto busca evidenciar que el ámbito notarial ha sido, y seguirá siendo, un núcleo de interacción económica y social en el cual las concepciones ideológicas más esenciales de un Estado se encuentran con la autonomía individual en el ejercicio mismo del notariado, por lo cual el notario cobra un papel de intermediario entre el Estado y la sociedad. El notario como depositario de la fe pública está en medio de una relación compleja y, a veces, conflictiva entre las bases ideológicas del Estado y el ideal de autonomía del notario y la ciudadanía. Para explicar la relación entre influencias ideológicas, notariado y sociedad el autor usa una metodología predominantemente genealógica haciendo un comentario histórico de la configuración ideológica que toma el notariado y el ejercicio notarial a lo largo de las sucesivas épocas de la historia colombiana para explicar la manera en que el notariado puede ser visto tanto como un medio de reproducción social o como una herramienta de enseñanza y defensa de los derechos humanos y ejercicio de autonomía.
