Book Description
This volume contains the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Image Sequence Processing and Dynamic Scene Analysis" held 21 June - 2 July, 1982 in Hotel Maritim, Braunlage/Harz, Federal Republic of Germany. The organizing eommittee of the institute consists of T.S. Huang (Director), H.G. Musmann (Co Director), H.H. Nagel (Consultant), and C.E. Liedtke and W. Geuen (Local 'arrangement). This Institute was devoted to the rapidly emerging field of image sequence processing and dynamic scene analysis which has man! important applications in cluding target tracking, television bandwidth compression, highway traffic moni toring, and analysis of heart wall motion for medical diagnosis. The lectures and discussions in this Institute fell into three overlapping categories: Motion estimation; pattern recognition and artificial intelligence techniques in dynamic scene analysis; and, applications. 1) Motion estimation - One of the most important problems in image sequence analysis and dynamic scene analysis is displacement and motion estimation. For example, in interframe coding using temporal DPCM, displacement estimation and compensation can improve efficiency significantly. Also, estimated motion parameters can be powerful cues in target segmentation, detection, and classification. In this Institute, a number of recently developed techniques for displacement and motion estimation were discussed.

Book Description
In diagnostic medicine a large part of information about the patient is drawn from data, which, more or less, are represented in an opti calor pictorial form. There is a very wide range of such data as e.g. the patients appearance, the various kinds of radiological images, or cytological imagery. In conventional diagnostics the data, as it comes from the acquisition device, is perceived by the physician and is interpreted with the help of a large amount of "a priori" knowledge to give a diagnostic finding. During the last 15 years a steadily rising number of attempts have been made to support these processes by the application of com puters. The attempts mainly concentrate on three objectives: 1. Support of the perception process by the production of better or new types of images, e.g. by Computer tomography or Computer angio graphy (image processing) . 2. Automation of the interpretation process, e.g. for bloodcell dif ferentiation (pattern recognition) . 3. Management of the steeply rising amount of medical image data in the hospital (image data bases) . Although the early applications of digital methods aimed at the second . . objective, in the last years much more success has been a achieved in the support of the perception process by methods of image process ing. The reason for this is obvious - in the case of automatic interpre tation the a priori knowledge of the physician has to be formalized.

Book Description
New imaging technology and more sophisticated image processing systems will have a profound effect on those areas of medicine which are concerned with imaging for diagnosis and therapy planning. Digitally formated data will form the basis of an increasing number of medical imaging modalities. Before the diagnostic imaging department of the future will largely be digital, many problems have still to be solved as regards image quality, costs, and ease of use. The computer and other information science derived methods will contribute towards solving many of the problems in these areas. It is widely expected that there will be an information science derived evolution in imaging for radiology and related departments. Computer assistance may be applied to image generation, e.g. CT, MRI, DR and DSR, storing and transferring of images, and viewing, analysing and interpreting of images. The application of computers to these activities (which characterise radiological departments), may be defined as Computer Assisted Radiology (CAR) . In the main, CAR will promote the transition from analog imaging systems to digital systems, integration of digital imaging modalities through Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS') and the graduated employment of Medica~ Work Stations (MWS) for diagnosis and therapy planning. It will transfer geographically, organisationally and/or mentally isolate imaging activities towards fully integrated multi-imaging modality diagnostic departments. This development will have a considerable impact on patient management, on the medical profession and on the health care system.

Book Description
The processing of image sequences has a broad spectrum of important applica tions including target tracking, robot navigation, bandwidth compression of TV conferencing video signals, studying the motion of biological cells using microcinematography, cloud tracking, and highway traffic monitoring. Image sequence processing involves a large amount of data. However, because of the progress in computer, LSI, and VLSI technologies, we have now reached a stage when many useful processing tasks can be done in a reasonable amount of time. As a result, research and development activities in image sequence analysis have recently been growing at a rapid pace. An IEEE Computer Society Workshop on Computer Analysis of Time-Varying Imagery was held in Philadelphia, April 5-6, 1979. A related special issue of the IEEE Transactions on Pattern Anal ysis and Machine Intelligence was published in November 1980. The IEEE Com puter magazine has also published a special issue on the subject in 1981. The purpose of this book is to survey the field of image sequence analysis and to discuss in depth a number of important selected topics. The seven chap ters fall into two categories. Chapters 2, 3, and 7 are comprehensive surveys on, respectively, the whole field of image sequence analysis, efficient coding of image sequences, and the processing of medical image sequences. In Chapters 1, 4, 5, and 6 the authors present mainly results of their own research on, respectively, motion estimation, noise reduction in image sequences, moving object extraction, and occlusion.

Book Description
This book is the consequence of a NATO ASI held at the Chateau de BONAS, from June 23 to July 4, 1980. It contains the tutorial lectures and some papers presented at the Institute. The book is divided in four sections: Issue.s-, of general interest. Some topics are broader than the proper techniques of image processing, such as complexity, clustering, topology, physiology; but they may be of interest ... Feature detect'ion and evaluation. The first level feature detections are examined: edges and textures. Reorganization and improvement of the results are obtained by relaxation and opti mization process. Cooperative process are examined. Scenes and shapes. concerns higher level problems, and representation of images such as map and line-drawings. Applications in remote sensing, scene analysis, of one or of a sequence of images. It is hoped that this book will serve to update a domain In fast evolution. Book Description
In recent years there has been a growth in interest in studying the heart from the perspective of the physical sciences: mechanics, fluid flow, electromechanics. This volume is the result of a workshop held in July 1989 at the Institute for Nonlinear Sciences at the University of California at San Diego that brought together scientists and clinicians with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who shared an interest in the heart. The chapters were prepared by the invited speakers as didactic reviews of their subjects but also include the structure, mechanical properties, and function of the heart and the myocardium, electrical activity of the heart and myocardium, and mathematical models of heart function.
