Book Description
ABSTRACT: The study was designed to compare self-perceptions of youth athletes and youth nonathletes. The components of Self- Perception include Scholastic Competence, Social Competence, Athletic Competence, Behavioral Conduct, Physical Appearance, and Global Self-Worth. The participants (N = 85) were eighth-grade students from a public magnet middle school in New England. The participants completed a demographic questionnaire and the Self-Perceptions Profile for Children (SPPC; Harter, 2012), a 36-item 4-point Likert-style scale designed to measure the six components of self-perception. Six independent group t-tests were used to determine if differences existed between athletes and nonathletes for each of the six subscales of the SPPC. Additionally, a Spearman's Rho correlation test was used to determine the relationship between length of time spent in organized sport and selfperception scores of athletes. The researcher found that a difference in Athletic Competence existed between athletes and nonathletes. A positive relationship also existed between the length of time spent in sport and Social Competence scores of athletes.

Book Description
The primary purpose of this study was to compare female athletes and non-athletes from both single-sex and coeducational school on three aspects of their psychosocial status: self-perceptions, body image, and gender-related cognitive schemata. Results showed that girls from coeducational school had overall higher self-perceptions than did girls from single-sex schools. Single-sex school girls exhibited more social physique anxiety than did coeducational girls and study participants as a group were more apt to use body competence to determine body image as compared to body appearance. Single-sex school girls and athletes were less gender stereotyped than were coeducational girls and non-athletes respectively. The current study addresses differences between school type and adds a new knowledge base to the somewhat dated research in the educational field. Additionally, this study examines a comparison between athletes and non-athletes on their body image (and body image orientation) and gender-related cognitive schema patterns using the newer constructivist approach.

Book Description
The Routledge Handbook of Youth Sport is a comprehensive survey of the latest research into young people’s involvement in sport. Drawing on a wide diversity of disciplines, including sociology, psychology, policy studies, coaching, physical education and physiology, the book examines the importance of sport during a key transitional period of our lives, from the later teenage years into the early twenties, and therefore helps us develop a better understanding of the social construction of young people’s lives. The book covers youth sport in all its forms, from competitive game-contests and conventional sport to recreational activities, exercise and lifestyle sport, and at all levels, from elite competition to leisure time activities and school physical education. It explores youth sport across the world, in developing and developed countries, and touches on some of the most significant themes and issues in contemporary sport studies, including physical activity and health, lifelong participation, talent identification and development, and safeguarding and abuse. No other book brings together in one place such a breadth and depth of material on youth sport or the engagement of young people in physical activity. The Routledge Handbook of Youth Sport is therefore important reading for all advanced students, researchers, practitioners and policy-makers with an interest in youth sport, youth culture, sport studies or physical education.
