Todas las investigaciones se inician con una fase de diagnóstico, porque es necesario conocer el punto de partida de aquello que queremos investigar. En la historia del Trabajo Social el diagnóstico tuvo un papel relevante en sus inicios; en las aportaciones teóricas de las pioneras, en especial de Mary E. Richmond, aparece como el símbolo para la profesionalización de una actividad que, hasta entonces, era de carácter voluntario. Pero este ímpetu, con algunos resurgimientos puntuales, fue desvaneciéndose a lo largo del siglo XX. El siglo XXI ha vuelto a poner sobre la mesa el diagnóstico social y esta obra tiene la voluntad de aportar su granito de arena al proceso de sistematización de los diagnósticos sociales. Se presenta una propuesta global que incluye marcos teóricos de referencia, una propuesta metodológica y una herramienta para el diagnóstico social.
