Book Description
Pixel detectors are a particularly important class of particle and radiation detection devices. They have an extremely broad spectrum of applications, ranging from high-energy physics to the photo cameras of everyday life. This book is a general purpose introduction into the fundamental principles of pixel detector technology and semiconductor-based hybrid pixel devices. Although these devices were developed for high-energy ionizing particles and radiation beyond visible light, they are finding new applications in many other areas. This book will therefore benefit all scientists and engineers working in any laboratory involved in developing or using particle detection.

Book Description
This thesis presents the complete chain from specifications to real-life deployment of the Read Out Controller (ROC) ASIC for the ATLAS Experiment at LHC, including the design of the FPGA-based setup used for prototype validation and mass testing of the approximately 6000 chips. Long-lasting experiments like the ATLAS at the LHC undergo regular upgrades to improve their performance over time. One of such upgrades of the ATLAS was the replacement of a fraction of muon detectors in the forward rapidities to provide much-improved reconstruction precision and discrimination from background protons. This new instrumentation (New Small Wheel) is equipped with custom-designed, radiation-hard, on-detector electronics with the Read Out Controller chip being a mission-critical element. The chip acts as a clock and control signals distributor and a concentrator, buffer, filter and real-time processor of detector data packets. The described and deployed FPGA-based test setup emulates the asynchronous chip context and employs optimizations and automatic clock and data synchronization. The chip's tolerance to nuclear radiation was evaluated by recording its operation while controlled ultrafast neutron beams were incident to its silicon die. Predictions for the operating environment are made. A proposed implementation of an FPGA Integrated Logic Analyzer that mitigates the observed limitations and constraints of the existing ones is included.

Book Description
This open access book is a comprehensive review of the methods and algorithms that are used in the reconstruction of events recorded by past, running and planned experiments at particle accelerators such as the LHC, SuperKEKB and FAIR. The main topics are pattern recognition for track and vertex finding, solving the equations of motion by analytical or numerical methods, treatment of material effects such as multiple Coulomb scattering and energy loss, and the estimation of track and vertex parameters by statistical algorithms. The material covers both established methods and recent developments in these fields and illustrates them by outlining exemplary solutions developed by selected experiments. The clear presentation enables readers to easily implement the material in a high-level programming language. It also highlights software solutions that are in the public domain whenever possible. It is a valuable resource for PhD students and researchers working on online or offline reconstruction for their experiments.

Book Description
This book describes the fundamentals of particle detectors as well as their applications. Detector development is an important part of nuclear, particle and astroparticle physics, and through its applications in radiation imaging, it paves the way for advancements in the biomedical and materials sciences. Knowledge in detector physics is one of the required skills of an experimental physicist in these fields. The breadth of knowledge required for detector development comprises many areas of physics and technology, starting from interactions of particles with matter, gas- and solid-state physics, over charge transport and signal development, to elements of microelectronics. The book's aim is to describe the fundamentals of detectors and their different variants and implementations as clearly as possible and as deeply as needed for a thorough understanding. While this comprehensive opus contains all the materials taught in experimental particle physics lectures or modules addressing detector physics at the Master's level, it also goes well beyond these basic requirements. This is an essential text for students who want to deepen their knowledge in this field. It is also a highly useful guide for lecturers and scientists looking for a starting point for detector development work.

Book Description
The standard model of particle physics provides a coherent description of highenergy physics processes and has been hugely successful in providing experimental predictions. Among its long list of achievements, the most significant is arguably that of the discovery of the Higgs boson half a century after being theorised, providing the last cornerstone needed for the standard model to become fully consistent. Despite huge successes, the standard model still suffers from major shortcomings. On the path leading towards a better understanding of particle physics, an in-depth study of the Higgs boson is key. This relentless work of characterising the properties of the Higgs boson is currently being undertaken at the Large Hadron Collider, where high-energy proton collisions are being recorded by dedicated detectors, providing a continuous improvement to the understanding of the standard model. Amid tremendous achievements, some processes, remain too weak to be detected with the current installations. One such measurement is the combined production of two Higgs bosons allowing for a direct handle on the Higgs self-coupling parameter of the standard model. To maximise the physics reach of the collider, it will be subjected to a major upgrade, allowing for a strong increase in luminosity. Such a dramatic change will bring major challenges to the experiments recording these collisions and upgrades are required if they are to maintain their outstanding performance. This thesis explores the upgrade of the CMS silicon strip detector, centred around the in-beam characterisation of detector module prototypes and discusses the physics reach of the upgraded machine, with an emphasis on Higgs boson pair production in the bbWW(l) final state.

Book Description
This thesis presents a search for long-lived particles decaying into displaced electrons and/or muons with large impact parameters. This signature provides unique sensitivity to the production of theoretical lepton-partners, sleptons. These particles are a feature of supersymmetric theories, which seek to address unanswered questions in nature. The signature searched for in this thesis is difficult to identify, and in fact, this is the first time it has been probed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It covers a long-standing gap in coverage of possible new physics signatures. This thesis describes the special reconstruction and identification algorithms used to select leptons with large impact parameters and the details of the background estimation. The results are consistent with background, so limits on slepton masses and lifetimes in this model are calculated at 95% CL, drastically improving on the previous best limits from the Large Electron Positron Collider (LEP).
