It will scarcely be pretended that Paul and his associates in the ministry were fond of cards or dancing. If they frequented the theatre, it was only to preach the Gospel to Such as could not be met with elsewhere. Their disciples, by imi tating their holy example, prevented the necessity of partic ular precepts. The argument in question is, therefore, of no particular importance, unless it be proved that these amusements are not forbidden by the general tenor of Scrip ture. Aside from the. Influence of those institutions which involve no expense at all, in no way can so much probable good be effected at so little expense, as by the dis tribution of Tracts. A Tract which contains fifteen pages, can be published for asingle cent And when we recollect how long a single Tract may be preserved, by how many individuals and families it may be read, and when read by them, to how many others it may be lent, it is difficult to conceive of a way in which more good can be accomplished by a very small amount of means. As an auxiliary to other means of doing good, the distribution of Tracts also holds a distinguished, place. In how many sick chambers, in how many meetings of anxious inquiry, in how many circles of wealth and prosperity, of fashion, folly, and vice, may these faithful witnesses be left to testify what other wise never would be told. The language of every Mis sionary Society, either domestic or foreign, is, A Mission ary without a supply of Tracts is unprovided for his work; the press isthe grand medium of communication in all parts of the missionary world. A missionary at Sumatra writes - I am fully of Opinion that, among all nations not accustomed to books, the distribution of small Tracts, writ ten in an easy style, or of single Gospels, is much more likely to do good than that Of-larger works. This opinion is strengthened by the experience and observation of every day Nor are the preceding suggestions founded in mere theory, but warranted by facts. Excerpt from Tracts of the American Tract Society, Vol. 13: General Series It is no time to dally and trifle, and speak softly, when precious souls are at stake, and their eternal condition is so nearly concerned. We cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard. Knowing the terrors of the Lord, we persuade men. The blood of your soul would lie at our door, if we should not give you warning. But what shall I say? Shall I tell you, that 1. The God with whom we have to do is a holy, righteous, all-seeing God. That which makes sinners secure is their mistake concerning this. They think of the Almighty as if he were easily imposed upon, altogether such a one as themselves. Thus they cheat themselves. But be not deceived. Know that God's eye is always upon you. He is acquainted with your secret sins. He hates every sin; and so all who are impenitent, he "is a consuming fire." He is too wise to be deceived. He is true to his threatenings. 2. Your precious, immortal soul must shortly appear before God in judgment, to be determined by a righteous doom to an unchangeable condition. You have a jewel in your hands of inestimable value. It is thy soul, thy precious soul. It is not a trifle, or a thing of naught, but thy own soul; and once lost, it is irrecoverably lost. The gain of all the world cannot compensate it. This soul, at the best, is in a very hazardous state. It lies at stake. It is in great danger. Thou art on a trial for thy life. 3. If you live and die in a graceless, unsanctified state, as sure as God is in heaven, you will be to eternity in hell.
