De Monceaux, Petis de Lacroix, Paul Lucas partirent pour le Levant avec mission de recueillir ces monuments d'un si grand secours pour l'etude de l'antiquite. Les resultats furent heu reux. D'un autre cote les ambassadeurs francais re curent les instructions les plus pressantes a l'effet de reunir des monnaies et des medailles dans tous les pays ou ils representaient leur souverain. Le Cu binet du roi prit donc en peu de temps une grande importance. Louis XIV le fit transporter a Versailles, ou il prenait plaisir a suivre les developpements et a assister au classement de cette collection deja celebre.
