Not illustrated. 1920 edition. Excerpt: ... TOXAEMIA OF DEMENTIA PRAECOX1 By BAYARD HOLMES, M.D. Precis: The condition known as dementia praecox is a clinical entity of loose pathologic demarcation. It is not hereditary or transmissible, but is frequent in families with a neurotic taint. It occasionally appears in twins and in brothers and sisters. The condition presents itself at adolescence in the great majority of patients, apparently later in females than in males, but it sometimes comes on in childhood and even in later life. Not only is the peak of frequency to be found at adolescence, but also the peak of intensity and uniformity of symptoms. The course of the disease is progressive, deteriorative, and destructive. It has a tendency to pass from one episode or exacerbation to another on a lower plane, but occasionally an episode is so fulminating that it proves fatal; and in other rare instances, the patient never suffers a second episode but remains a sub-normal the rest of his life. A very small number o? patients never pass out of the first episode, but live a relatively long life in fulminating disease. The morphologic findings and many of the objective symptoms are similar to those of a profound toxaemia with toxines having a selective action on one or more organs beside the brain. This condition, in symptomatology and pathologic morphology, is not unlike to ergot poisoning, and the retinal symptoms resemble those of intestinal intoxication. These patients complain early of abdominal discomfort and of the perversion of the senses, especially of the senses of taste, of smell, and of feeling. The perversions of sight and of hearing axe usually termed delusions or hallucinations by the alienists. It is an added evidence of a toxaemia that the endocrine glands suffer...
