Book Description
Excerpt from Memorial Address at the Dedication of the Soldiers Monument, Maple Grove Cemetary, Randolph, New York Thucydides, writing of those who fell at Marathon, declared that the whole world is a mausoleum of those who die for the preservation of the liberties country. Though foul are the drops that oft distil On the field of warfare, blood like this For Liberty shed, so holy is, it would not stain the purest rill That sparkles among the bowers of bliss. Oh, if there be, on this earthly sphere, A boon, an offering Heaven holds dear, 'tis the last libation Liberty draws From the heart that bleeds and breaks in her cause. Book Description
Excerpt from Dedication of the Soldiers Monument at Dorchester, September 17, 1867 The whole structure is built in the most substantial manner, the different courses being clamped together with composition bars. The ground at the base of the monument is graded thirty feet square, about a foot above the natural level, and inclosed by a heavy border of hammered Quincy granite. Gravel walks lead to the tablets, terminating in a circular gravelled space; the rest of the inclosure is turfed. The architect of the monument was Mr. B. F. Dwight, of Boston; and the contractors were the Gloucester Red Granite Company. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
