Their styles clash, but their desire to stop "The Bird" trumps their differences. Suffering from PTSD, "The Bird's" paranoia has taken control of him and he extracts his revenge. Book Description
On September 18, 1928, Myles Yutaka Fukunaga kidnapped and brutally murdered ten-year-old George Gill Jamieson in Waikîkî. Fukunaga, a nineteen-year-old nisei, or second-generation Japanese American, confessed to the crime. Within three weeks, authorities had convicted him and sentenced him to hang, despite questions about Fukunaga's sanity and a deeply flawed defense by his court-appointed attorneys. Jonathan Y. Okamura argues that officials "raced" Fukunaga to death—first viewing the accused only as Japanese despite the law supposedly being colorblind, and then hurrying to satisfy the Haole (white) community's demand for revenge. Okamura sets the case against an analysis of the racial hierarchy that undergirded Hawai‘ian society, which was dominated by Haoles who saw themselves most threatened by the islands' sizable Japanese American community. The Fukunaga case and others like it in the 1920s reinforced Haole supremacy and maintained the racial boundary that separated Haoles from non-Haoles, particularly through racial injustice. As Okamura challenges the representation of Hawai i as a racial paradise, he reveals the ways Haoles usurped the criminal justice system and reevaluates the tense history of anti-Japanese racism in Hawai i.

Book Description
Rose Parker passed quietly one night, never having required custodial or hospice care. The support Ray received from his father and his adopted son, Manny Morris, was admirable. Erin and Miller weathered the gossip and had three normal children and a wonderful life together. Gaye and Jay were married and gloried in their "second lives," based on (of all things) love. Nora and Jaque did not marry but continued to love each other. Vanessa hadn't asked if Jaque were her biological father. When and if she did . . . Gino Capetti declined to press charges against his captors. Before his trial was to begin, he feigned the symptoms of acute appendicitis. Though in a lock ward at the hospital, his visiting doctor looked enough like Gino that Gino rendered him unconscious, changed into the doctor's clothes, and was released unknowingly. Ten minutes later, when the doctor stumbled out of the room, Gino had disappeared. Gino's guard was given a new assignment, walking a beat in an obscure part of town. Gino's plan was to get to Mexico, have his face changed, and return to Jacksonville to repay the Ortegas for their "hospitality." Before leaving town, he managed to get an old bicycle, which he left at the gate entry to the Ortega complex. Nora correctly interpreted the implication.

Book Description
Vengeance permeates English Renaissance drama - for example, it crops up in all but two of Shakespeare's plays. This book explores why a supposedly forgiving Christian culture should have relished such bloodthirsty, vengeful plays. A clue lies in the plays' passion for fairness, a preoccupation suggesting widespread resentment of systemic unfairness - legal, economic, political and social. Revengers' precise equivalents - the father of two beheaded sons obliges his enemy to eat her two sons' heads - are vigilante versions of Elizabethan law, where penalties suit the crimes: thieves' hands were cut off, scolds' tongues bridled. The revengers' language of 'paying' hints at the operation of revenge in the service of economic redress. Revenge makes contact with resistance theory, justifying overthrow of tyrants, and some revengers challenge the fundamental inequity of social class. Woodbridge demonstrates how, for all their sensationalism, their macabre comedy and outlandish gore, Renaissance revenge plays do some serious cultural work.
