Some facilities are so special that they literally define their sport. Stock car racing as it is known today did not exist until one man, armed with a vision and a willingness to get his hands dirty, constructed a race track in the middle of a South Carolina peanut field. More than six decades later, Darlington Raceway is still considered one of the crown jewels of racing. "The Lady in Black" is home to the largest margin of victory in NASCAR® history and its closest-ever finish. The legendary track has been the proving ground for every superstar of the sport.

Book Description
To lure settlers into the wild backcountry of Darlington, the British colonial government offered two large tracts of land to a group of Welsh Baptists from Delaware in 1736. The land of dense pine forests still bearing the footprints of the Cheraw tribe of Native Americans welcomed the Welshmen, and they located on a bend in the Pee Dee River that came to be known as Welsh Neck. Eventually, German, Swedish, Scotch Irish, English, and French Huguenot settlers came too, creating more communities and towns, and a few entrepreneurs made their fortunes on the fertile land along the river's banks. The railroads came in the 1850s, and industry joined agriculture as a way of life. In 1950, the new Darlington Raceway celebrated America's love affair with the automobile. Today Darlington County presents a mingling of vintage architecture with the contemporary. This is Darlington County, at once historic and thoroughly modern.

Located in the Sandhills region of North Carolina, Rockingham Speedway opened in 1965. The legendary Curtis Turner made his return to NASCAR® with a victory in the track's inaugural event in 1965, while local favorite Benny Parsons clinched the 1973 championship here. A 1994 victory at Rockingham clinched that year's NASCAR championship for Dale Earnhardt. It was his seventh title, tying Earnhardt with Richard Petty for most in the sport's history. The facility formerly known as North Carolina Motor Speedway and respectfully nicknamed "The Rock" experienced a rebirth under the direction of new owner Andy Hillenburg. Rockingham Speedway showcases the rich NASCAR history of this North Carolina track.
