Book Description
Excerpt from Success Dahlia Gardens, 1929 Mrs. Shirley shaw (dec.) - Ox blood red shaded maroon, this magnificent flower sometimes has a tendency to eome with crooked stems, but notwithstanding this fact was more universally admired than any Dahlia in our gardens. The wonderful dark rich color and immense size capture every one. After one year this remarkable crea tion has made a host of friends. This Dahlia must be seen to be appreciated as it is impossible to describe the beautiful rich blendings from almost black to nearly a scarlet on each petal. It also found its place among the elite of the Dahlia world on the Roll of Honor for 1928. It is a real joy to grow a Dahlia like Mrs. Shirley Shaw. Book Description
Excerpt from Bessie Boston Dahlias, 1929 If you enjoy working in the garden, grow Juliette. It is one of those dahlias which just seem to love to bloom. From early August to December, our bushes have been a mass of large, well formed blooms. The color might be described as white, heavily overlaid with rose pink. The effect is a pink blossom. Plants grow fairly tall and bushy, every bush seems to produce about a million buds. You can take them all off one week and go back the next week and find another big supply to take up your time. In this part of the world we don't appreciate these excessive bloomers, they take up too much valuable time. But then, when you grow thousands of bushes of dahlias, that is not to be wondered at. We certainly hope that some of our customers will keep track of the blossoms of this variety next year. We once had a report of a Mariposa, grown in New Jersey, which produced fifty blooms, Many people thought this was marvelous. However, nearly all of our varieties produce a good many more blossoms than that in a season. This is an attractively formed flower, with long, narrow petals. Book Description
Excerpt from Certified Dahlias, 1929 This splendid new yellow Decorative will, I predict, be in the yellow class, What Jersey's Beauty is in the pink. I have watched it closely for the past three years, and it has all the attributes of a perfect Dahlia. This Dahlia while primarily a commercial Dahlia, yet can be grown to exhibition size. I have seen many 9 inches across and from 4 to 5 inches in depth. It has the long, free branching habit of its parent Jersey's Beauty, and a plant pinched once or twice can carry eight to twelve perfect flowers, none less than 6 inches. The stems are more slender than Jersey's Beauty, yet always stiff, holding the flowers erect and at a proper angle for vase work.
