Book Description
Excerpt from Cyclopaedia of Methodism in Canada: Containing Historical, Educational, and Statistical Information, Dating From the Beginning of the Work in the Several Provinces of the Dominion of Canada, and Extending to the Annual Conferences of 1880 The results of Methodism in the social, civil and religious interests of the world, are not appreciated - are not known even. Indeed they cannot be till the great balance sheet shall be made up. Methodism saved England from French atheism and anarchy; the United States from antinomianism and a licentious liberalism; and Canada from a State ecclesiasticism. It has saved the Protestant Churches of Great Britain and America from the stupor of the dark ages. Those blessed men who were the immediate instruments of this great salvation are worthy of monuments more enduring than the pyramids of Egypt. The fragrance of their memory will be as fresh a thousand years hence as it is now never, never lost - rather increasing in its preciousness till Gospel triumphs shall culminate in glory. In the year 1867 we published the handbook or canadian metho dism, which contained a full record of all the ministers and preachers whose names had appeared in the Minutes of Conference down to that date, together with those who travelled in Canada under the direction of the Methodist Episcopal Church of the United States of America, prior to the formation of the Canada Conference, and those who laboured under the direction of the British Wesleyan Conference. Book Description
Excerpt from Cyclopaedia of Methodism in Canada, Vol. 2: Containing Historical, Educational and Statistical Information Concerning the Work of the Church in the Several Provinces of the Dominion of Canada; Newfoundland, Bermuda, Japan and China; 1881 to 1903 This second volume of The Cyclopaedia of Methodism in Canada has been compiled In order that many items of interest in the work Of the Church and its ministers might be permanently preserved. Twenty-two years have passed away Since the publication of Volume I., during which four branches of the Methodist Church in Canada have been united, thus largely increasing the number of Ministers, Conferences, Educational Institutions and Missionary Work. I am grateful for the large number of letters of commendation and approval which have been sent to me regarding my first volume, for the many testimonials of brethren, both lay and clerical, as to its great value and usefulness as a standard work of reference, and also for the unanimous request of the General Conferences of 1890 and 1894 that I Should continue the work of compilation, and to the General Conferences of 1898 and 1902 for requesting its publication. This second volume records the work of the Church from '1881 to the month of April, 1903, and will prove of equal value with Volume I. As a reliable work of reference on the items therein contained. It will be noticed that some changes have been' made in the arrangement of the names of the Ministers in this volume. Instead of giving a separate alphabetical list for each Annual Conference as in Volume I I have included all in one alphabetical list, indicating in connection with each name the Conference in which his station was located. This will greatly facilitate the work of reference and somewhat condense the Size of the volume. It will also be noticed that the part referring to the Circuits and Missions with the Ministers stationed thereon, etc., has been altogether omitted. It was found exceedingly difficult, and in some cases impossible to continue the record with any degree of satisfactory correctness, owing to the many changes made in the boundaries and work of a large number of the Circuits and Missions by the amalgamation of Churches and the consolidation of the work rendered necessary by the Union of 1883.
