Book Description
Excerpt from Crops and Markets, Vol. 6: August 7, 1926 Movement started with a rush on July 23 and most shipments were completed in the first 10 days of the deal. The movement reached its peak about July 28 and shipments were expected to be practically completed by August 5. Total output for this section will hardly reach 200 cars, compared with 480 last year. Quality and flavor of the cantaloupes _w ere considerably above average. Practically all cars that were inspected at shipping point graded U. S. No. 1. A few fields ran heavily to large sizes and, in many -instances, the flat crates contained only nine melons. Prices received, for the most part, were not favorable, and the deal has shown very little profit to growers. Most cars were handled on a consignment basis, with an occasional cash buyer at loading point. The late spring and dry weather also held back tomatoes in southern Indiana, so that the express shipments started about two weeks later than usual. Car-lot movement began July 25, and by August 2 these shipments were discontinued because of the low prices received. Quality of the tomatoes was much poorer than usual due to deep growth cracks, and many cars ran heavily to smaller sizes. By August 2 about 25 cars moved from the Decker section, against 83 cars shipped last year. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Crops and Markets, Vol. 6: October 9, 1926 Demand for fruit. Continued. Somewhat limited, possibly because of the abundance of practically all lines. Apple ship ments increased and exceeded the movement of any other product, but prices changed very little. Peaches declined to discouragingly low levels; the late crop is finding a poor market. California grapes still were a puzzle; with production much heavier than last season, shipments are falling far short of expectations and markets are weak. Eastern grapes were becoming more plentiful. Pear trading was moderate. The week's movement of 27 products increased to cars. Butter markets were firmer during the week ended October 2. Supplies were decreasing and demand, being fairly active, quickly absorbed them. Prices showed advances toward the close. Production possibilities for the period just ahead remain uncertain, although weather conditions have for the most part been favorable.
