Book Description
Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 3 of 3 In the spirit of that invocation we look around us, and as the idea of morning dies, sufficient for our happiness is the light Of common day - the imagery of common earth. There has been rain during the night - enough, and no more, to enliven the burn, and to brighten its banks - the mists are ascending composedly, with pro mise of gentle weather - and the sun, so mild that we can look him in the face with unwinking eyes, gives assu rance, that as he has risen, so will he reign, and so will he set in peace. Book Description
Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 3: Collected and Republished (First Time, 1839; Final, 1869) The German language, it is presumable, thou knowest if not, shouldst thou undertake the study thereof for that sole end, it were well worth thy while. Croquis, a man otherwise of rather satirical turn, surprises us, on this occasion, with a fit of enthusiasm. He declares often, that here is the finest of all living heads speaks much of blended passion and repose; serene depths of eyes; the brow, the temples, royally arched, a very palace of thought; -and so forth. Book Description
Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays: Collected and Republished; Vols. I. And II Of his Life of Richter these preliminary observations may be our excuse for saying but little. He brags much, in his Preface, that it is all true and genuine; for Richter's widow, it seems, had, by public advertisement, cautioned the world against it; another biography, partly by the illustrious de ceased himself, partly by Otto, his oldest friend and the appointed Editor of his Works, being actually in preparation. This rouses the indignant Spirit of Doring, and he stoutly asseverates that, his documents being altogether authentic, this biography is no pseudo-biography. With still greater truth he might have asseverated that it was no biography at all. Well are he and Hennings Of Gotha aware thatthis thing of shreds and patches has been vamped together for sale only. Except a few letters to Kunz, the Bamberg Bookseller, which turn mainly on the purchase of spectacles, and the jour neyings and freightage of two boxes that used to pass and repass between Richter and Kunz's circulating library; with three or four notes of Similar importance, and chiefly to other booksellers, there are no biographical documents here, which were not Open to all Europe as well as to Heinrich Doring. Indeed, very nearly one half of the Life is occupied with a description of the funeral and its appendages - how the sixty torches, with a number of lanterns and pitchpans, were arranged; how this Patrician or Professor followed that, through Friedrich Street, Chancery Street, and other streets of Bayreuth; and how at last the torches all went out, as Dr. Gabler and Dr. Spatzier were perorating (decidedly in bom bast) over the grave. Then, it seems, there were meetings held in various parts of Germany, to solemnize the memory of Richter; among the rest, one in the Museum of Frankfort-ou Mayn; where a Doctor Berne speaks another long Speech, if possible in still more decided bombast. Next come threnodies from all the four winds, mostly on very Splay-footed metre. The whole of which is here snatched from the kind oblivion of the newspapers, and lives in Settle's numbers one day more. Book Description
Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 1 of 3 How beautiful are all the subdivisions of time diversifying the dream of human life, as it glides away between earth and heaven! And why should moralists mourn over that mutability that gives the chief charm to all that passes so transitorily before our eyes, leaving image upon image fairer and dearer far than even the realities, still visible, and it may be for ever, in the waters of memory sleeping within the heart? Memory never awakes but along with imagination, and therefore it is "That she can give us back the dead, Even in the loveliest looks they wore!" The years, the months, the weeks, the days, the nights, the hours, the minutes, the moments, each is in itself a different living, and peopled, and haunted world. One life is a thousand lives, and each individual, as he fully renews the past, reappears in a thousand characters, yet all of them bearing a mysterious identity not to be misunderstood, and all of them, while every passion has been shifting and dying away, and reascending into power, still under the dominion of the same unchanging conscience, that feels and knows that it is from God. Book Description
Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 6 of 7 IT appears to be, if not stated in words, yet tacitly felt and nu derstood everywhere, that the event of these modern ages is the French Revolution. A huge explosion, bursting through all formulas and customs confounding into wreck and chaos the ordered arrangements of earthly life blotting-out, one may say, the very firmament and skyey loadstars, - though only for a season. Once in the fifteen-hundred years such a thing was ordained to come. To those who stood present in the actual midst of that smoke and thunder, the effect might well be too violent: blinding and deafening, into confused exasperation, almost into madness. These onlookers have played their part. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
