Dwindling competition for sheep and lambs has been caused by the closing of several major packing plants. The closings have resulted in a reduction in the number of buyers competing for lambs in any given local area. The number of major plants in the United States has declined from 31 in 1970 to 20 in 1976 in response to declining sheep numbers. Even in 1970, the two largest packers in each Western and Midwestern State bought 50 to 75 percent of all lambs and in each Eastern and Southern State bought 75 to 100 percent. Because plants are currently oper ating at only 40 percent of capacity, more plants will close in the future and competition will be further restricted. Dwindling efficiency of the lamb marketing system is largely the result of low vol ume and an obsolete handling system. Lnefficiency is evidenced by an ever-widening farm retail price spread for lamb that, since 1950-52, is growing 55 percent faster than the price spread for beef and 90 percent faster than the price spread for pork. Excerpt from Cooperative Lamb Slaughtering in the Northeast In 1980, 15 northeastern States produced and marketed lambs and sheep, 7 percent of the million lambs and 8 percent of the million sheep marketed in the United States. Ohio had the greatest lamb production in the Northeast and provided 40 percent of the region's total. Virginia was second with 22 percent. (see fig. 1 for lamb marketings by State.) The trend in lamb marketings in Northeast has been downward, with an average annual rate of decline of head from 1966 to 1980. Over that period, lamb marketings decreased 51 percent, just slightly less than the decrease of 54 percent for the United States. If the trend continues, the 15-state area will market only lambs in 1985 and be out of the lamb business in 1990. However, the regional trend has moderated since 1975. Many States have reversed the downward trend. Most of the New England States except Maine have been increasing production since 1970. Maine has been doing so since 1976. Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey have been relatively stable since 1970. Ohio and Virginia, the two largest producing States, seem to have stopped their downward trends and are expected to increase produc tion. Kentucky also appears to be at the bottom of its decline. New York, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia probably have not reached the turning point yet, but they are close. Projections for 1985 and 1990 are shown in table 1 and figure 2. The term "sense of place" is an important multidisciplinary concept, used to understand the complex processes through which individuals and groups define themselves and their relationship to their natural and cultural environments, and which over the last twenty years or so has been increasingly defined, theorized and used across diverse disciplines in different ways.
