Book Description
Hereby we present the results of our Doctorate research, in the frame of European university convergence towards the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), whose implementation means unifying educational criteria, approaches, methodologies, programmes, credit systems and degrees in the 47 participant countries, giving at the same time a positive appreciation to the cultural diversity involved and to its adequate treatment as essential factors for quality. An educational system at the same time reflects and helps to conserve and transmit the culture of a particular country. In all cases, members of a cultural and academic community share a number of fundamental values that people from other cultures have to discover, recognize, identify, get to know, understand, accept, learn, assume and develop in order to feel fully integrated and be able to interact on equal terms/conditions and therefore achieve the results and success desired. What does it mean to be a good Higher Education professor in increasingly international, multilingual and multicultural learning environments? What perceptions do international students have on this profile, considering that they come from different learning traditions and previous educational experiences, and have got diverse socio-cultural backgrounds and characteristics? What quality expectations in this respect do they bring with them to the multicultural classroom? How can professors meet these expectations and thereby improve their teaching? From a systemic perspective on education, in terms of education quality and effectiveness our research considers, inter alia, a number of different variables such as input: professor, students with diverse cultural origins/profiles, traditions/previous experiences of university education; context: multicultural learning environments in Higher Education, climate and culture of the classroom; process: teaching and learning techniques/strategies, teaching and learning styles, intercultural approach; product: Intercultural Competence. As it can be seen in detail in the analysis of the results obtained in our research, statistically significant differences directly reflect cultural factors described in the various respondent student profiles, as well as in their different traditional university models. It has been therefore proved/verified that the culture of the classroom or the academic culture (teaching and learning culture) is a true reflection of the culture or the cultural profile of those societies in which the university sits as an integral part/member.

Research on University Teaching and Faculty Development
Author: Olga M. Alegre de la Rosa
Publisher: Nova Science Publishers
ISBN: 9781536108842
Category : College teachers
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
The book Research on University Teaching and Faculty Development: International Perspectives contains twenty-five solid and powerful chapters treating research aspects that reflect current university issues in ten countries. The book has been written by 60 proficient educators and accredited researchers. They have explored university teaching and faculty development as a field of inquiry that uses qualitative and quantitative methodological approaches for studying almost forty university topics. These themes range from academic planning, accountability, and action research to change in teacher education. The question of a relationship between university teaching and teacher induction is first introduced in the book to train future teachers with techniques and social elements that require a scientific rather than an artistic approach to reflective practices. Eight chapters inquire why some university campuses produce more/better collaborative teaching and change predisposition in higher education. The sort of attempt to discover activeness during teaching practice and to define the nature of the induction year may well provide a path to some basic understanding and offers tremendous research potential into the teaching profession. The second section of the book regards faculty development as an enigma. Written throughout five chapters, it stresses expert-novice studies to make coherent sense out of experience within the faculty. The action research approach is a basic method to studying active teaching/assessment and, accordingly, to an understanding of the forces resulting in the internal consistency of the learning communitys styles and processes. A crucial point is the female perspective at the higher education level that has permeated the culture of justice. The third part of the book contains six chapters of a quality nature. Governments and funding initiatives are focusing on the provision of university leadership development as a vehicle for renewing curriculum and quality assurance. The major beneficiaries of a well-run university change system in higher education are the students and graduates of any age, social and personal condition. New research on student assessment is unique among academic responsibilities in providing a direct linkage between learning activities and quality assurance, strategic decision-making processes. In this respect, how universities interpret inclusive education for students with developmental disabilities, and establishing structural relationships with society are important strategic matters to improve the functioning of the universitys organisation. Technology as an agent of university change is the fourth part of the book. It covers six chapters dealing with the impact of digital technology on traditional academic practices. Students' navigating discourses seem appropriate to enhance university learning because they intersect knowledge, competencies, confidence, information, and communication. The present day routine of Web 2.0 instruments in university teaching includes the use of computer generation and storage, to create and disseminate artifacts of undergraduate and graduate students.

Teaching Transformed
Author: Roland Tharp
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429976577
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 254
Book Description
The social organization of teaching and learning, particularly in classrooms, has not yet been recognized as a foundational element of education. However, social constructionist views of human development, cognition, and schooling, as well as the increasing challenges of cultural and linguistic diversity, make it a vital concern for teachers, researchers, and policymakers. This book introduces the concept of educational social organization, assembles the pertinent theory and evidence, and suggests future directions for training and policy. }The four goals of school reform--academic excellence, fairness, inclusion and harmony--can be achieved simultaneously, by transforming the final common pathway of all school reform--instructional activity. Teaching Transformed is a new vision for classrooms, based on consensus research findings and unified practice prescriptions, explained and justified by new developments in sociocultural theory, and clarified by an explicit five-phase developmental guide for achieving that transformation. Teaching Transformed is both visionary and practical, both theoretical and data-driven, and determined to create effective education for all students. Professional educators, parents, and any reader concerned with saving our schools will find this book necessary to understand our current plight, and to envision a realistic means of transformation.
