Book Description
GaN three-dimensional columnar core-shell LEDs are considered to be one of the promising candidates for prospective solid state lighting. In comparison to conventional planar layer LEDs, columnar core-shell LEDs have many advantages. For instance, in a columnar GaN coreshell LED structure the InGaN/GaN MQW wraps around the column, therefore the light emitting area can be enormously increased. This is the main driving force behind the intense investigation of nanowire and micro-columnar LEDs. In addition, because of the increased area of the MQW, the internal quantum efficiency may be improved by a reduction of the local carrier density, mitigating the efficiency droop. Besides, due to the reduced influence of thermal and lattice mismatch between the substrate and columns, dislocation-free GaN column arrays can be achieved on large area substrates. The main contribution of the present work is the controlled growth of GaN columns and core-shell LEDs by metal-organic vapor-phase expitaxy. The growth conditions which lead to vertical growth of N-polar and Ga-polar GaN columns are systematically investigated. The causes of the vertical growth are explained by surface processes under appropriate conditions for both polarities. Quantitative discussions of growth kinetics of GaN columns are an important feature in this work. The difficulties and the strategies of the MQW and p-GaN shell growth on high aspect ratio GaN columns are presented in detail.

Semiconductor Nanostructures
Author: Dieter Bimberg
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540778993
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 369
Book Description
Reducing the size of a coherently grown semiconductor cluster in all three directions of space to a value below the de Broglie wavelength of a charge carrier leads to complete quantization of the energy levels, density of states, etc. Such “quantum dots” are more similar to giant atoms in a dielectric cage than to classical solids or semiconductors showing a dispersion of energy as a function of wavevector. Their electronic and optical properties depend strongly on their size and shape, i.e. on their geometry. By designing the geometry by controlling the growth of QDs, absolutely novel possibilities for material design leading to novel devices are opened. This multiauthor book written by world-wide recognized leaders of their particular fields and edited by the recipient of the Max-Born Award and Medal 2006 Professor Dieter Bimberg reports on the state of the art of the growing of quantum dots, the theory of self-organised growth, the theory of electronic and excitonic states, optical properties and transport in a variety of materials. It covers the subject from the early work beginning of the 1990s up to 2006. The topics addressed in the book are the focus of research in all leading semiconductor and optoelectronic device laboratories of the world.

1D Semiconducting Nanostructures for Flexible and Large-Area Electronics
Author: Dhayalan Shakthivel
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108624162
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 163
Book Description
Semiconducting nanostructures such as nanowires (NWs) have been used as building blocks for various types of sensors, energy storage and generation devices, electronic devices and for new manufacturing methods involving printed NWs. The response of these sensing/energy/electronic components and the new fabrication methods depends very much on the quality of NWs and for this reason it is important to understand the growth mechanism of 1D semiconducting nanostructures. This is also important to understand the compatibility of NW growth steps and tools used in the process with these unconventional substrates such as plastic that are used in flexible and large area electronics. Therefore, this Element presents at length discussion about the growth mechanisms, growth conditions and the tools used for the synthesis of NWs. Although NWs from Si, ZnO and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are included, the discussion is generic and relevant to several other types of NWs as well as heterostructures.
