Excerpt from Contemporary Evidence of Shakespeare's Identity In taking up the question, whether we should revise our opinion that William Shakespeare, born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564, was the author of the plays we know as Shakespeare's, it seems to me we should first review the extrinsic evidence on which for the last three centuries the English-speaking world has been satisfied to accept that belief. The Anti-Shakespeareans, Baconians, and others, seem to me for the most part to pass by all these primary outside evidences prior to the folio of 1623, and to assume, that the evidence of Shakespeare's authorship of his dramas, is based entirely on Hemmings & Condell's statement. By a hasty assumption of an absolute illiteracy, on the part of the actor at the Curtain and Globe Theatres, on the one hand, and an almost equally rash imputation of nearly universal knowledge and culture, to the author of the dramas on the other, they raise an apparent incongruity which they claim to be insuperable; and thus leave the field open, for the wild dreams and theories of Baconian or syndicate authorship, cypher secrets, and historic mysteries in which they delight. So long as the world holds so many studentes novarum rerum, who are ready to accept omne ignotum pro mirifico, they will never lack readers and followers. Excerpt from Shakespeare's Warwickshire Contemporaries Some years ago I thought that it might be of interest to the students of Shakespeare to know something of his Warwickshire contemporaries, and I wrote a series of twelve articles, one each month, for The Stratford-upon-Avon Herald, which were appreciated so far that the Editor reprinted them in book form in the following year. That edition sold out at once. I have since gone over the ground again very carefully, making so many corrections and additions that the present edition may fairly claim to be a new book. I originally selected my subjects on account of some relation, real or imaginary, which I believed they might have had to Shakespeare, and I limited them to biographies that had not been fully treated. Hence I had not mentioned the famous Warwickshire poet Michael Drayton (whom we know that Shakespeare knew), because there were good lives of him. But in the comparative leisure of drawing up a second edition, I have thought it necessary to complete the cycle of the contemporaries by including Drayton. The arduous labors of Professor and Mrs. Wallace in the manuscript archives of England, during the course Of which they examined over a million documents, recently yielded some fresh information; yet the small number Of their finds assures us that nearly all that we are likely to know Of the personal affairs of the great dramatist has already been made pub lic. This stagnation in discovery is perhaps responsible for the tendency, especially marked in the last decade, for writers to deal in fanciful speculation, evolving from Slight evidence, or none worthy of the name, bizarre and Often elaborately detailed hypotheses regarding Shake speare's relations with his contemporaries. Excerpt from Mr. William Shakespeare: Original and Early Editions of His Quartos and Folios, His Source Books and Those Containing Contemporary Notices The Exhibition of which this is the catalogue was made possible by the generosity of a number of collectors of New York and other places in the United States. Their cooperation has resulted in this remarkable collection of Shake-speareana. The British Museum owns the best single collection of the kind, but it has not all of the books presented here, nor can it bring together for a loan exhibition such a collection as this. The reason is that nearly all the important collections of Shakespeare's works in England are in public institutions and cannot be lent to form one exhibition. The introduction to the Census of Shakespeare's Plays in Quarto mentions the difference in ownership and location of Shakespeare's works in England and in America. In England Shakespeare's works are chiefly in public collections where they may be examined by the student, but may not be withdrawn for exhibition or study elsewhere. In America they are chiefly in the libraries of private collectors whose generosity affords opportunities for the public like the present one. Unfortunately, there are in America but three public collections which contain Shakespeare's works of sufficient value to form the basis of an exhibition. These are in the Boston Public Library, which contains the Barton Collection, in the Elizabethan Club of Yale University, with its famous Huth quartos, and in The New York Public Library, with its Lenox Collection.
