These papers consist primarily of correspondence (1887-1909) related to the American Protective Association (APA), a secret patriotic and anti-Catholic society founded in Clinton, Iowa on March 13, 1887. Correspondents include Henry F. Bowers--founder and first Supreme President of the organization--as well as other Supreme Council members (John W. Echols, W.J. Palmer, W.J.H. Traynor et al). In addition to the correspondence, other APA materials in the papers include pamphlet communications from Bowers, a resolution objecting to the display of a statue of Pere Marquette in the U.S. Capitol's Statuary Hall, a resolution proposing constitutional amendments for U.S. states, a copy of the APA constitution of the State Council of Pennsylvania, membership report forms from various U.S. APA councils (1897-1898), and news clippings. Bowers' other fraternal memberships are represented in the collection by poems he wrote and presented at the Kaaba Temple Shrine, Davenport, Iowa; notes of a lecture on the origins of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry at Charleston, South Carolina; and notes from a presentation on the framers of the U.S. Constitution delivered before the Clinton County Bar Association.
