Democratization of Nepal and the Issues Associated with Its Consolidation
Author: Akshyata Uprety

ISBN:

Languages : en
Pages : 30
Book Description
In 2008, Nepal celebrated its long-awaited victory over the 240-year-old monarchy when the King was overthrown by the newly-elected Constituent Assembly. Since then, Nepalese people have made numerous attempts to incorporate in Nepal, the norms and values required to consolidate its new-found democracy. However, the process of democratization in Nepal has proven to be extremely difficult given its perennial history of authoritarian monarchical rule. Within the time-span of ten years, the country has shown all three- transitional, systematic, and contextual problems associated with third-wave democracies. Whilst the first two problems- transitional and systematic problems undoubtedly daunt democratic prospects of the country, the paper postulates that the greatest obstacles in the trajectory of Nepali democracy have arisen from contextual issues given Nepal's long history of authoritarian rule. Reiterating the significance of its history, the research paper attempts to evaluate the effects of prolonged authoritarian rule on citizens and analyze whether or not it has played a role in destabilizing democratic aspirations of the country. Using qualitative methodology of interview for data collection, the paper finds that contextual issues such as history has had an impact on democratic consolidation of Nepal as sentiments of "authoritarian nostalgia" has become widespread among Nepali citizens.

Contentious Politics and Democratization in Nepal
Author: Mahendra Lawoti
Publisher: SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 356
Book Description
Contradicting the popular thesis that contentious politics generally promotes democratization, this topical book shows that some forms of contentious politics can hinder it, even as other forms strengthen democracy. It also suggests that the nature of activities—whether they are coercive or voluntary—lead to different effects on democratization. A timely addition to the literature on Nepal, it will be of interest to scholars studying democratic politics, as well as practitioners engaged in nurturing development in fledgling democracies.

Nepal in Transition
Author: Devi Prasad Tripathi
Publisher:
ISBN: 9789381411070
Category : Democratization
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Nepal's democracy struggle has been continuing for more than six decades. Since it could not sustain a stable democratic framework even after several attempts in the past, many scholars are stating that Nepal is in permanent transition. Once again, however, it has bagged enormous success in the field of political transformation in 2006 through a highly successful but peacefully organised movement with participation of people from all fields in large numbers. But it could not deconstruct the position of the transition as it has failed to institutionalise the recently gained achievements by making a new constitution even after five years. The only positive thing is that Nepali people, along with various political parties, are still trying hard to resolve vital conflicting issues through dialogue, and come up with a new democratic constitution, though they have already missed three deadlines.
