Book Description
The Western Ghats forests are endowed with large species and habitat diversity, which is nowadays under threat by increasing demographic pressure and changing land use. To address these challenges, a novel and comprehensive approach is sought from the principles of landscape ecology. Morpho-pedological features are used to delineate landscape units all over the Western Ghats of Kerala, among which the Western Anamalai region is chosen to elucidate the relative influence of physical factors, bioclimate and anthropogenic pressures on the characteristics of natural vegetation and on the status of the vertebrate fauna. Highlighting patterns of resource utilization by proximal and distant stakeholders, the book goes about identifying value-based management zones, while proposing management strategies for conservation and sustainable development.

Book Description
Regional planning involves an in-depth analysis and integration of data from physical, human and political geographies which comprises of various disciplines such as climate, hydrology, geology, soils, topography, vegetation, wildlife / biodiversity, transportation, demography and human impact on the landscape, land ownership, transportation, land use land cover, and many more. It involves not only the analysis within each of these disciplines, but should also incorporate the impact of these disciplines on each other (McHarg, 1969; Spirn, 2001). Advancements in Geographic Information System (GIS) over the last couple of decades has allowed researchers and scientists to do a more in-depth analysis of information and data within various disciplines of geography. My research looks at Kodagu district in the southern Indian state of Karnataka which is part of a global biodiversity hotspot the Western Ghats (R. A. Mittermeier et al., 1999; Russell A. Mittermeier, Myers, Thomsen, Da Fonseca, & Olivieri, 1998; Myers, 1988, 1990) and also a major coffee producing region. The first part of my research is devoted to defining the environmental problems that the world is facing today because of lack of planning. I call it “reverse extraction”, where nature is coming back and reclaiming its habitat. It is visible all around us - with increasing floods in cities where wetlands and floodplains have been transformed for human use; in areas of rich biodiversity where humans have converted land for their use which is close to forests, and is now having serious wildlife human conflict. I discuss the possibility of using GIS as a tool to create future scenarios for the region and using them to bring communities into a participatory planning process. The second part of my research looks at the planning policies and structure in India including the role of central, state and local governments. I compare that with the regional planning policies and initiatives in California and examine how India could learn and leapfrog into better planning by learning from how it has fared here. Being the fastest growing economy time is running out for India and it can benefit by borrowing some of the positives from California planning initiatives. The third and the final section demonstrates how complex issues such as elephant human conflict can be modeled using advanced spatial statistical analysis methods in a GIS, to identify the causes of the conflict. Only when we know the causes and relationships between various factors will we be able to make the affected communities aware of this and bring it all together into an integrated planning process.

Book Description
The hill chain of Western Ghats, a treasure trove of biodiversity and the water tower of peninsular India has been engrossed the attention of various stakeholders all over the world. This region is identified as one among the eight hottest hotspots of biodiversity and hence attracted worldwide attention. This book is a compilation of various research articles related to Western Ghats, its ecology, environment, geography, biodiversity, etc. The editors have taken utmost care to include articles related to various issues such as, the debates over WGEEP and HLWG reports, studies on mining and quarrying activities, agriculture and allied activities, issues related to sustainable agricultural practices, agrarian distress, impact of migration, changing land use pattern, other economic activities and its impact on the environment and ecology, etc. The book offers an insight into the concerns of the farmers and offers policy solutions wherever possible.

Book Description
Growing human populations and higher demands for water impose increasing impacts and stresses upon freshwater biodiversity. Their combined effects have made these animals more endangered than their terrestrial and marine counterparts. Overuse and contamination of water, overexploitation and overfishing, introduction of alien species, and alteration of natural flow regimes have led to a 'great thinning' and declines in abundance of freshwater animals, a 'great shrinking' in body size with reductions in large species, and a 'great mixing' whereby the spread of introduced species has tended to homogenize previously dissimilar communities in different parts of the world. Climate change and warming temperatures will alter global water availability, and exacerbate the other threat factors. What conservation action is needed to halt or reverse these trends, and preserve freshwater biodiversity in a rapidly changing world? This book offers the tools and approaches that can be deployed to help conserve freshwater biodiversity.
