Book Description
by A. Berthoz The publication of this volume, edited by Adriano Ferrari and Giovanni Cioni, is a major event for several reasons. Most importantly, it concerns an area of child pathology that has yet to be fully explored. In this context, the authors’ efforts to compile their observations as well as those of other clinicians and to elaborate their theories have resulted in an ess- tial step in the field of cerebral palsy (CP). The originality of the book is its very clear focus, while at the same time the authors have encouraged the book’s contributors to express their ideas and personal opinions. This leads sometimes to redundancy, but this is precisely one of the benefits of the book - cause the same problems are then exposed from different points of views. The reader is thus spared the normative attempts of many other pathology books, in which the compl- ity of a given disease is hidden by the authors’ or editors’ desire to impose a rigid taxo- my or epidemiology.

Book Description
Abstract: Many researchers have studied the sensory and motor deficits resulting from congenital hemiplegia. Deficits have been found in force coordination, anticipatory scaling of force, and finctional reaching tasks. In addition deficits have been found in stereognosis and two-point discrimination. There has been some conflicting data in the area of kinesthesia. However, the area of texture and weight discrimination has been largely ignored. The Hand Active Sensation Test (HASTE) is a recently developed test that has been found valid and reliable when evaluating baptic sensation (weight and texture discrimination) in adults following a stroke. However, the efficacy of using this assessment to evaluate haptic sensation in children with congenital hemiparesis has not been investigated. Therefore the intent of this research was three-fold: 1) To investigate the content validity, test-retest reliability, and internal consistency of the HASTE in children aged 6 1/2 -10 1/2 with and without congenital hemiparesis; 2) To delineate the differences in sensory and motor function between children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy and typically developing controls; and 3) To evaluate the relationship between sensory and motor dysfunction in children with hemplegic cerebral palsy. Six children with congenital hemiplegia (ages 6 1/2 to 10 1/2) and six age-matched controls were tested over two sessions with an average of 7 days apart. The paretic or non-dominant hand was assessed using the HASTE, Jesbsen-Taylor-Sand, Nottingham method of stereognosis, two-point discrimination, and hand strength using the Jamar dynamometer. Mi assessments were administered on the first testing session and only the HASTE was re-administered during the second testing session. The data collected indicated that the HASTE is a valid, reliable, and internally consistent measure of haptic sensation in children with hemiparesis. It is able to discriminate between children with hemiparesis and typically developing children. In addition, moderate correlations between the sensory and motor assessments demonstrate a significant sensorimotor relationship.
