Book Description
There currently is no accepted credentialing or certification process for the many inexperienced clinicians beginning to perform Transperineal Interstitial Permanent Prostate Brachytherapy (TIPPB). The work being funded by this grant is designed to establish quality assurance (QA) guidelines for the conduct of TIPPB for the purpose of performing national, multi-institutional cooperative studies. The guidelines are intended to: (1) ensure that participating institutions have the proper equipment and appropriate procedures in place to administer TIPPB; (2) define a standard TIPPB data set to be submitted to the 3DQA Center for each treated patient to assess protocol compliance; (3) define an electronic data exchange mechanism for submission of each protocol patient's digital data set; and (4) establish a QA review process of the submitted data. Substantial progress has been made in establishing a methodology for electronic data exchange. A proposed credentialing process and QA guidelines have been developed. Work is in progress in modifying a CMS FOCUS 3DRTP system to serve as a TIPPB QA review station. Work will begin in the next funding period on the development of remote QA review tools and a national database for the TIPPB treatment planning data that can be linked with clinical outcome data.

Book Description
The work funded by this grant was used to establish credentialing requirements and quality assurance (QA) guidelines for the conduct of national, multi-institutional cooperative group studies of Transperineal Interstitial Permanent Prostate Brachytherapy (TIPPB). A methodology for electronic data exchange of TIPPB treatment planning verification data between institutions participating in a future TIPPB protocol and the 3DQA Center at Washington University in St. Louis has been developed. In addition, the 3DQA Center has developed a credentialing process and QA guidelines to ensure that participating institutions have the proper equipment and appropriate procedures in place to administer TIPPB. A 3D radiation treatment planning (3DRTP) system has been adapted to serve as a 3DQA review Station of clinical and dosimetric data for patients entered on Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) and other cooperative group TIPPB protocols. Remote review software tools that allow centralized QA and dose evaluation have been developed. A database for the TIPPB treatment planning data that can be linked with clinical outcome data has been developed.

Book Description
Brachytherapy is continuously advancing. Years of accumulated experience have led to clinical evidence of its benefit in numerous clinical sites such as gynecological, prostate, breast, rectum, ocular, and many other cancers. Brachytherapy continues to expand in its scope of practice and complexity, driven by strong academic and commercial research, by advances in competing modalities, and due to the diversity in the political and economic landscape. It is a true challenge for practicing professionals and students to readily grasp the overarching trends of the field, especially of those technologies and innovative practices that are not yet established but are certainly on the rise. Addressing this challenge, Emerging Technologies in Brachytherapy presents a comprehensive collection of chapters on the latest trending/emerging technologies and expert opinions. It is divided into five broad sections: Section I: Physics of Brachytherapy Section II: Imaging for Brachytherapy Guidance Section III: Brachytherapy Suites Section IV: Is Brachytherapy a Competitive Modality? Section V: Vision 20/20: Industry Perspective Each section has a carefully selected collection of chapters, which covers the spectrum of topics in comprehensive detail. By drawing on recognized experts and key opinion leaders from academia and commercial sectors worldwide (100+ contributors), Emerging Technologies in Brachytherapy provides readers with a wealth of relevant information needed to comprehend the rapidly advancing technologies and trends of today and the prospects for the future.

Book Description
Developments in radiation oncology have been key to the tremendous progress made in the field in recent years. The combination of optimal systemic treatment and local therapy has resulted in continuing improved outcomes of cancer therapy. This progress forms the basis for current pre-clinical and clinical research which will strengthen the position of radiation oncology as an essential component of oncological care. This book summarizes recent advances in radiotherapy research and clinical patient care. Topics include radiobiology, radiotherapy technology, and particle therapy. Chapters cover a summary and analysis of recent developments in the search for biomarkers for precision radiotherapy, novel imaging possibilities and treatment planning, and advances in understanding the differences between photon and particle radiotherapy. Advances in Radiation Therapy is an invaluable source of information for scientists and clinicians working in the field of radiation oncology. It is also a relevant resource for those interested in the broad topic of radiotherapy in general.

Book Description
This handbook is designed to enable radiation oncologists to treat patients appropriately and confidently by means of particle therapy. The orientation and purpose are entirely practical, in that the focus is on the physics essentials of delivery and treatment planning , illustration of the clinical target volume (CTV) and associated treatment planning for each major malignancy when using particle therapy, proton therapy in particular. Disease-specific chapters provide guidelines and concise knowledge on CTV selection and delineation and identify aspects that require the exercise of caution during treatment planning. The treatment planning techniques unique to proton therapy for each disease site are clearly described, covering beam orientation, matching/patching field techniques, robustness planning, robustness plan evaluation, etc. The published data on the use of particle therapy for a given disease site are also concisely reported. In addition to fully meeting the needs of radiation oncologists, this "know why" and “know how” guide to particle therapy will be valuable for medical physicists, dosimetrists, and radiation therapists.

Book Description
Brachytherapy is an essential component of the curative treatment of cervical cancer, a disease with high incidence in many developing countries The IAEA supports the use of high dose rate brachytherapy for centres with a large number of patients with this disease. HDR brachytherapy is also used in other common cancers such as breast cancer, lung, esophagus and prostate. This publication provides guidance to radiation oncologists, medical physicists and planners on establishing and operating a high dose rate brachytherapy unit with modern standards and presents the main issues to be addressed for its effective and safe operation.

Book Description
Carcinoma of the prostate increasingly dominates the attention of urologists for both scientific and clinical reasons. The search for an explanation and the prediction of the variable behaviour of the malignant prostatic cell continues unabated. The search for more precise tumour staging and more effective treatment is equally vigorous. Editors Andrew Bruce and John Trachtenberg have assembled acknowledged leaders in prostate cancer to present those areas of direct interest to the clinician. There are a number of other topics that might have been considered but most of these, such as experimental tumour models or biochemical factors affecting cell growth, still lack immediate application for the clinician. Carcinoma of the prostate continues to have its highest incidence in the western world, and the difference in comparison with the incidence in the Far East appears to be real and not masked by diagnostic or other factors. A number of other epidemiological aspects need careful analysis: Is the incidence increasing? Is the survival improving? Is the prognosis worse in the younger patient? Epidemiological data are easily misused and misinterpreted so that a precise analysis of the known facts makes an important opening chapter to this book.
