Book Description
Confessions of an English Teacher: A Memoir of My Teaching Years was written to share some of my extraordinary experiences teaching English at six high schools and seven community colleges in Orange County, California, from 1973 to 2018. I share these memories because they were so disappointing in their discovery. I imagined that as an English teacher, I was prepared to teach the subject I was trained for, but I learned that was far from the truth. My training as an English teacher should have prepared me to teach essential skills. It did not. As I reflect on my teaching at these schools, I discovered that my English degree needed to produce a prepared English teacher for teaching the skills of reading, grammar, and writing. Looking back at what I was mandated to teach revealed a sad truth: teaching English to high school and college students was filled with traditions that needed to change. With what I discovered to be traditional problems in teaching English, I offer recommendations for change for high schools and community colleges.

Book Description
Everyone has a story to tell. Fearless Confessions is a guidebook for people who want to take possession of their lives by putting their experiences down on paper—or in a Web site or e-book. Enhanced with illustrative examples from many different writers as well as writing exercises, this guide helps writers navigate a range of issues from craft to ethics to marketing and will be useful to both beginners and more accomplished writers. The rise of interest in memoir recognizes the power of the genre to move and affect not just individual readers but society at large. Sue William Silverman covers traditional writing topics such as metaphor, theme, plot, and voice and also includes chapters on trusting memory and cultivating the courage to tell one's truth in the face of forces—from family members to the media—who would prefer that people with inconvenient pasts and views remain silent. Silverman, an award-winning memoirist, draws upon her own personal and professional experience to provide an essential resource for transforming life into words that matter. Fearless Confessions is an atlas that contains maps to the remarkable places in each person's life that have yet to be explored.

Book Description
What it means to be a Jew lies at the very heart of Confessions of a Secular Jew, a provocative memoir and a thoughtful speculation on the nature of Jewish identity and experience in an increasingly secular world. The legacy bequeathed to Eugene Goodheart was a "progressive" secular Yiddish education which identifi ed Jewish struggles against oppression with working class struggles against exploitation. In the vanguard was the Soviet Union. Goodheart's heroes were Moses, Bar Kochbah, Judah Maccabee, Karl Marx and that strange honorary Jew, Joseph Stalin, whose anti-Semitism would later become known to the world. Confessions of a Secular Jew is the story of Goodheart's disillusionment with the naive, even false, progressivism of that education. At the same time, it is an attempt to rescue and come to grips with the positive remains of that education and heritage.
