Book Description
“Blessed are they that wash their robes in the Blood of the Lamb” (Apoc. 22:14). Catholics truly may be called “blessed” in the means they have of washing the sin-stained robes of their souls in the Precious Blood of the Lamb of God in the Sacrament of Penance! There is no question but that confession—especially frequent confession—is an inestimable blessing to mankind. Man can hope for no greater blessing on this earth than true peace of soul. The Sacrament of Penance is a perennial fountain of peace. It is a source of untold consolation to human hearts. This sacrament gives any and every member of the Catholic Church who has transgressed the holy laws of God, an easy and simple means to obtain full pardon, and to be restored to His friendship. This is its first and principal effect. Its second effect is to wipe out the punishment due to sin; eternal punishment entirely, and temporal punishment in whole or in part, according to the penitent’s dispositions. It closes the gates of hell, which open to swallow up in the infernal abyss souls who deliberately turn away from God by mortal sin and sunder the ties binding them to Him by preferring their own will to His. A good confession opens anew the portals of heaven, which is barred to souls as long as they remain in the state of grievous sin. It clothes souls with the beautiful nuptial garment of sanctifying grace, or renders that garment still more beautiful if the soul already possesses it. It restores past merits, which are lost by even a single mortal sin. It renders the soul capable again of performing meritorious acts, which is impossible while it is in the state of mortal sin. It confers sacramental graces; that is, powerful supernatural helps to avoid sin in the future, and to persevere in the service of God. It gives a claim to the special graces the soul needs in order to lead a God-pleasing life. Finally, it checks sinful passions and inclinations to evil. To partake in fullest measure of these blessings of the Sacrament of Penance, it is necessary for the penitent to know how to make a good confession. The present booklet is an attempt to help souls in this all-important matter by explaining the five requisites of a good confession and various points which are of vital importance for the fruitful reception of this Sacrament.

Book Description
In this second edition of her profound book on confession, which theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar calls "one of her most central works", Adrienne von Speyr discusses the moral and practical aspects of this sacrament in great depth. The most complete spiritual treatise on confession ever written, the book covers conversion, scruples, contrition, spiritual direction, laxity, frequency of confession, confessions of religious and lay people, and even confessions of saints. The most intriguing element in von Speyr's understanding of confession, fully developed in this volume, is its trinitarian and christological basis. The Cross is the archetypal confession, and Christian sacramental confession is thus an imitation of Christ in the strict sense. Confession examines the enormous fruitfulness of this dogmatic basis from many perspectives, giving a wealth of suggestions that both the theological expert and the layman will find very helpful. Its practical applicability to one's own confession emerges from every page.

Book Description
Paul Wilkes has written an elegant, prescriptive, secular book—a spiritual gem—that reinvents the power of confession for a contemporary audience. Confession is the foundation of religion, the essence of mental health. It is listening to the voice within to follow the path to honest and conscious living. And for thousands of years people have used the power of confession to find their best selves. Liberating confession from the confessional, The Art of Confession draws on traditions as old as ancient Greece and as modern as psychoanalysis as diverse as Judaism, Catholicism, and Islam, to show readers how to incorporate a confessional practice into their daily lives. There are visualizations, spiritual exercises, prompts, and meditations; private confessions, direct confessions, psychological confessions. Accompanied throughout by a wise “confessional chorus”—a rabbi, a priest, a psychiatrist, a nun, whose points-of-view complement and augment the text—The Art of Confession is an antidote to our age of oversharing, where we happily broadcast the minutest details of our lives in public, yet never find the time to discover the risk, relief, and ultimately the renewal that real, considered self-reflection offers.

Sister, it couldnt have happened! declared the priest. It was all a dream, like the other time. But Sister Catherine shook her head with childlike confidence. Oh no, Father! I see the Blessed Virgin as plainly as I see you. And she wants the Medal made right away, so people can wear it and start receiving graces. Father Aladel just could not believe that Our Lady was appearing to Sister Catherine Laboureand asking for a medal to be made too! Why, Sister Catherine was only a novice! Forget the whole thing, he told her. Just say your prayers and try to be like the other Sisters. Catherine obediently tried to forgetbut then the Blessed Mother came again! And again she asked for the Medal to be made. Would Our Ladys request ever be granted? Would Fr. Aladel ever believe she had really come? And what were the great graces she had promised to those who wore the Medal with confidence? This book shows what happened, also telling about Catherines second mother, and about obstinate old Johnwho refused to have anything to do with the Medaland about how Sister Catherine kept her big secret. In short, here is the wonderful story of what happened when the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to young St. Catherine Laboure.

Book Description
Maybe Sister Margaret Mary is a saint. Nonsense! The poor young woman has been out of her mind for years. Thats a lie! It is not! It is! The gossip in town raged on. The nuns themselves did not know what to think about this Sister who reportedly saw Our Lord. Even the superior, Mother Greyfie, didnt know what to think. But one day she decided to settle the question once and for all. For some time now Sister Margaret Mary had been seriously ill. Well, if Our Lord would cure her immediately and keep her in perfect health for five months, she, Mother Greyfie, would have no more doubts about the so-called apparitions, but would work to spread devotion to the Sacred Heart. So off went Mother Greyfie to the infirmary, where Sister Margaret Mary lay sick in bed. What was going to happen now? This book gives the answer. It also tells about Margarets painful days at home, her difficulties in becoming a nun, about St. Claude De la Colombiere, about the lonely young Catholic Duchess, and about Our Lords message concerning His Sacred Heart. In short, this is the remarkable story of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque and the wonderful promises of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Book Description
This rich classic passed out of common usage years ago, but here we find it restored for the first time to the benefit of the English reader. St. Alphonsus transformed the landscape of the experience of this Reconciliation, and our confessional experience would be unthinkable without his saintly, intellectual, and pastoral prowess. While the cultural and historical context is amazingly fascinating, it necessitates peeling back those layers to see the glimmering treasure within. For that reason, this edition provides an introductory essay that steps lightly to take note of these difference for a fruitful reception of the saint's genius. May all readers benefit for the greater glory of God.
