Book Description
This volume contains the Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) and Emil-Warburg-Symposium (EWS) "Nonlinear Coherent Structures in Phy sics and Biology" held at the University of Bayreuth from June 1 -4, 1993. Director of the ARW was K. H. Spatschek, while F.G. Mertens acted as the co-director, host, and organizer of the EWS. The other members of the scientific organizing committee were A.R. Bishop (Los Alamos), J.C. Eilbeck (Edinburgh), and M. Remoissenet (Dijon). This was the eighth meeting in a series of interdisciplinary workshops founded by our French colleagues who had organized all the previous workshops, e.g. 1989 in Montpel lier and 1991 in Dijon. We were asked to organize the meeting this time in Germany. Of course, we wanted to keep the character defined by the previous meetings, which were always characterized by an open and friendly atmosphere, being not too large in quantity, but high in quality. This time altogether 103 participants attended the workshop. During the past years most of the participants met several times and discussed problems connected with the generation of nonlinear coherent structures in physics and biology.

Nonlinear Cooperative Phenomena In Biological Systems - Proceedings Of The Adriatico Research Conference
Author: Leif Matsson
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814544949
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 358
Book Description
This textbook, pitched at the advanced-undergraduate to beginning-graduate level, focuses on mathematical topics of relevance in contemporary physics that are not usually covered in texts at the same level. Its main purpose is to help students appreciate and take advantage of the modern trend of very productive symbiosis between physics and mathematics. Three major areas are covered: (1) linear operators; (2) group representations and Lie algebra representations; (3) topology and differential geometry. The following are noteworthy features of this book: the style of exposition is a fusion of those common in the standard physics and mathematics literatures; the level of exposition varies from quite elementary to moderately advanced, so that the book is of interest to a wide audience; despite the diversity of the topics covered, there is a strong degree of thematic unity; much care is devoted to detailed cross-referencing so that, from any part of the book, the reader can trace easily where specific concepts or techniques are introduced.

Waves Called Solitons
Author: M. Remoissenet
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 286
Book Description
This book is an elementary introduction to the fascinating world of waves called solitons. These large-amplitude waves, which can propagate over long distances without dispersing and which display particle-like properties, are one of the most striking manifestations of nonlinearity. The main concepts are introduced at an elementary level accessible to the undergraduate. In a self-contained and interdisciplinary whole, such topics as electrical, hydrodynamic, chemical, and optical solitons, are discussed. Many of the author's choices of emphasis have been made with experiments in mind; several experiments can readily be performed by the reader. This book is not meant for specialists but for students, physicists, engineers, and practitioners. The chapters are independently written in order that the reader should quickly find the required information. The second edition of this highly praised book has new material, especially on nonlinear transmission lines, on various forms of modulational instabilities, and on quantum optical solitons.
