Compression Testing of Sheet Materials at Elevated Temperatures
Author: Ralph Papirno
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Metals
Languages : en
Pages : 21
Book Description
Information on a novel compression testing machine and extensometer system for both short- and long-time testing at elevated temperatures is presented. In combination with a lateral solid or ball-bearing support guide compression jig, this system has been used to obtain compressive stress-strain and creep data on sheet materials. The compression unit is horizontal in operation which results in low spatial temperature variations in the test region. A pneumatic loading system permits accurate control during the loading phase and avoids undesirable seismic effects during creep. The elevated-temperature extensometer utilizes differential capacitor sensors which combine a high sensitivity for accurate determination of elastic modulus with a long linear response range. Sheet compression tests were performed in a jig having lateral solid or ball-bearing support guides. Short-time and creep data are presented for a number of sheet titanium alloys up to 950 F.

Evaluation of a System for Compression Testing of Sheet Materials at Elevated Temperatures
Author: W. W. Breindel

ISBN:
Category : Metals

Pages : 8
Book Description
A critical evaluation is presented of a system that has been used to obtain compression stress-strain data for sheet materials at elevated temperatures. Descriptions of the supporting apparatus for the specimen, the method of heating, specimen design, and the method of strain measurement are presented. Particular emphasis is centered on the effect of lateral support afforded the specimen by the fixture. Illustrations showing the effect of modifications in the method of support are included, as well as some typical experimental results.

An Evaluation of Compression Testing Techniques of Sheet Materials at Elevated Temperatures
Author: George Gerard
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Metals

Pages : 9
Book Description
This program was conducted in order to assess the accuracy of several compression testing techniques of sheet materials at elevated temperatures. The information obtained on the various techniques under relatively controlled conditions was used as a guide in establishing uniform compression testing procedures for the Titanium Sheet Rolling Program.

Compressive Properties of Aluminum Alloy Sheet at Elevated Temperatures
Author: John E. Dorn
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Alloys
Languages : en
Pages : 19
Book Description
Apparatus has been developed to allow the compression testing of sheet materials at elevated temperatures. It includes a testing fixture, a special extensometer, and an oil-bath furnace which are described in detail. The short-time compressive properties of five high-strength aluminum alloy sheet materials have been determined at temperatures up to 300 F. after exposures ranging from 1⁄2 to 1000 hr. The materials include 24S-T, 24S-T81, 24S-T86, R301-T, and 75S-T. The effects of temperature and time on compressive yield strength are compared with those for the corresponding tensile properties and it is found that approximate values of compressive yield strength may be derived from calculations based upon the tension values. Of the materials tested, the members of the 24S-T8 series appear to offer the best possibilities for elevated-temperature service.
