Book Description
In writing this book my main purpose is to set forth a way of thinking about art. The most that such a book can do is to direct the thoughts, awaken a sense of power and point to ways of controlling it. The principles of art teaching here outlined might be illustrated in other ways and with better examples. I hope the reader will see how each chapter can be developed into many sets of lessons. The progressions can be varied, materials changed, lessons amplified and different designs chosen, providing there is no sacrifice of essentials. The book is based upon my experience in painting and teaching for more than twenty years. The first edition of Composition was published in 1899. In this revision I have made many additions and used new illustrations without departing from theory or principles. Composition was chosen as a title because that word expresses the idea upon which the method here presented is founded—the "putting together" of lines, masses and colors to make a harmony. Design, understood in its broad sense, is a better word, but popular usage has restricted it to decoration...

Book Description
First published in 1899, Arthur Wesley Dow's Composition has probably influenced more Americans than any other text to think of visual form and composition in relation to artistic modernity. While Dow is known as the mentor of Georgia O'Keeffe and Max Weber, his legacy as a proponent of modern art has suffered undeserved neglect by recent artists and art historians. In Composition Dow develops a system for teaching students to create freely constructed images on the basis of harmonic relations between lines, colors, and dark and light patterns. Greatly influenced by Japanese art, he expounds a theory of "flat" formal equilibrium as an essential component of telling pictorial creation. Generations of teachers and their public school pupils learned from Dow's orientalism and adopted basic postimpressionist principles without even knowing the term. The reappearance of Dow's practical, well-illustrated guide, enhanced by Joseph Masheck's discussion of its historical ramifications, is an important event for all concerned with the visual arts and the intellectual antecedents of American modernism.

Book Description
Arthur Wesley Dow an American painter, printmaker, photographer and influential arts educator. Dow teacher at three leading American arts training institutions. The Pratt Institute, the New York Art Students League then he founded the Ipswich Summer School of Art in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Also a professor of fine arts at Columbia University Teachers College. His ideas were quite revolutionary; he taught that rather than imitating nature, art should come from the elements of the composition, like line, mass, and color. He wanted leaders of the society to see art is a living force in ordinary life for all, not a sort of traditional decoration for the few. Dow suggested this lack of interest would improve if the way art is presented to permit self-expression and incorporate personal experience in creating art. His ideas on Art are published in this book Composition: A Series of Exercises in Art Structure for the Use of Students and Teachers. This book reveals the concept upon which the method here presented is founded the composition of lines, masses, and colors to result in harmony. Composition, building up of peace, is the central process in all the fine arts. A natural method is of exercises in progression, first building up basic harmonies, such a method of study, it includes all kinds of drawings, design, and painting. It offers a means of training for the creative artist, the teacher or one who studies art for the sake of culture.

Design, understood in its broad sense, is a better word, but popular usage has restricted it to decoration. Composition, building up of harmony, is the fundamental process in all the fine arts. I hold that art should be approached through composition rather than through imitative drawing. The many different acts and processes combined in a work of art may be attacked and mastered one by one, and thereby a power gained to handle them unconsciously when they must be used together. If a few elements can be united harmoniously, a step has been taken toward further creation...
