Book Description
Excerpt from Compend of General Pathology IN preparing this compend the practical needs of the student have been considered, controversial matter and references to authors and articles have therefore been omitted, and the ch'ort to simplify the subject steadily maintained. The chief text-books in English, French and German have been consulted, as well as many monographs and special articles, and it is believed that nothing included will be found at variance with the text-books used in American medical colleges. Chapter VI. Is based almost wholly upon a syllabus prepared by Prof. Jas. Ewing, of Cornell Medical College, for one of his classes, and my thanks are due him for permission to use it. I am indebted also to Dr. J. C. Johnston, of the same institution, for valuable hints and for the photographs which illustrate the chapter on neoplasms. The negatives for these and for Figs. 58, 77 and 78 were made by Dr. B. H. Buxton, of Cornell, and kindly loaned by him. Book Description
Excerpt from A Compend of General Pathology and Morbid Anatomy An attempt has been made to bring the subject up to the present knowledge, without advancing theories which might be erroneous or disputable. It is trusted that the work will be found useful to the physician who may wish the gist of a subject, as well as to the student who may wish to intensify his knowledge, without being obliged to gather his material from voluminous text books, to which this work is merely an accessory, rather than a substitute. Book Description
Excerpt from d104-Book of General Pathology In modern times physiology and pathology had a common starting-point in the doctrine of the cell as the ultimate unit of the animal body; but, nevertheless, they tended for many years to diverge. Physiology was concerned chiefly with certain specialized functions of cells, the phenomena of which hardly touch the problems of disease, and was hampered in its progress by the backward condition of such ancillary sciences as chemistry and physics. Pathology, greatly influenced by anatomy, was engaged with the observation of results rather than the elucidation of the underlying vital processes. Within recent years, however, the two sciences have converged again, for not only has the scope of physiological inquiry regarding the intimate processes of cellular life been broadening, but pathology, in recording such phenomena as those of perverted secretion or the effects of morbid cellular life on normal functions, has opened up new lines of inquiry for the physiologist. Disease, in fact, has often supplied physiological experiments far more delicate than any that could be performed in the laboratory. There is thus at present a constant interaction of the two sciences; the way has thus been opened up for the elucidation of the doctrine often foreshadowed by the older pathologists that the laws of disease are really the laws of health, and lack of co-ordination between the normal activities of the component tissues of the body is often the most important factor in the origin of disease. Although the establishment of these principles is still very incomplete, it has seemed to the editors of this book that the time has come for another attempt to present, as far as it may be possible, the results obtained by the two sciences in working at the problems of disease. Book Description
Excerpt from The Principles of Pathology, Vol. 1: General Pathology If in writing the original work the hopelessness of the attempt to master the subject in all its aspects impressed the writer, still more has his inability to keep abreast of the advances in all branches of medicine and cognate sciences during the last two years weighed upon him in revising this edition.
