Book Description
Excerpt from Comparative Free Government Since all governments are manifestly affected by the struggle for freedom, none can be omitted from the final comparison. Yet as an introduction to the study some governments are clearly more important than others and may be used to illustrate the political organizations of the less conspicuous members of their own class. In this respect the United States holds first place because it was the first great state distinctly founded upon the theory of popular control, and because of its influence, both direct and indirect, upon all other states. It forms, especially for the American student, a natural basis for a comparative study of government throughout the world. The institutions of the United States are therefore described with considerable de tail, fully half of the book being devoted to their consideration. This part is not primarily comparative, but descriptive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The State and Government It is hardly necessary to enumerate other explana tions of development set forth by sociological writers. The The very fact that the progress of civilization progress of can be indicated under so many aspects shows mama that these are but specialized phases Of one great movement of a unified social life, manifesting itself under many different forms, but all alike teaching that mankind is rising from primitive savagery to higher and more ethical, more intellectual stages of development. Evidently, therefore, even the most advanced peoples have not yet attained the highest possible development. Even the best of them are low and savage when com pared with the ideals of social perfection taught by the noblest representatives Of humanity in ages past and present. Further development is still possible, and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Free Government in England and America: Containing the Great Charter, the Petition of Right, the Bill of Rights, the Federal Constitution IT would seem to be an easy task to arrange a just system Of relations between government and people; certainly so on the basis that the former is an agency created by and for the sole ben efit, advantage, and protection of the latter. In theory, this is the purpose and end Of every description of polity, the public good being the grand objective point to be reached. Since this is true, and since ours is a govern ment which the people themselves must operate, it seems manifestly desirable that some time should be given in the elementary schools to a consideration of the activities oi the government. This book has been Written for the pupils of the elementary schools. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Our Government Local, State, and National The subject-matter herewith presented partially represents the plan pursued by the authors as teachers of civil government for a number of years in high school, academy, and normal school. It has been found that a study of the methods by which the affairs of government are conducted gives constant interest to the work, and, consequently, the practical side of government has been emphasized. But while our desire has been to bring the actual working of the institutions under which the student lives into prominence, we have also attempted to give such accounts of the origin and early development of forms of government as will assist in explaining their process of growth. The plan of discussion is similar to that followed in "Government in State and Nation." The general favor with which that text has been received leads to the belief that it fully meets the requirement of the Committee of Seven for such schools as present civil government in the third or fourth year of the course. In many cases, however, the subject is taught earlier in the course, and the present work has been prepared in answer to the requests of teachers for a text suitable to this class of students. The arrangement is such that either Local (Part I), National (Part II), or State Government (Part III) may be studied first. In the work on local and State government it is not expected that the student will learn all of the different practices found in the various States, but that he will compare them with those of his own State.
