Book Description
Excerpt from Colonial Children In the conviction that the freshest and most direct writings are those which most appeal to children of every age, this volume and its three companions have been prepared. The books are made up of sources, but not of sources in the garb of three centuries ago, unfamiliar to modern children. The language and spelling have been freely altered, while the thought has been preserved. Much has been omitted, but it has not been the intention to add any statement not expressed in the original. If children are interested in this book, it will be because their ancestors were interesting, and not because a modern mind has invented a story for them. History has been taken in its large sense, as a record of the life of the people, and hence many descriptions of manners and customs have been included. While long narratives in general had to be avoided, the lack of verse is due simply to the fact that colonial poetry is in general too rugged or too stupid for children, and cannot be modernized. In later volumes verse will appear more freely. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Letters From Colonial Children These letters are planned to give an idea of how life in some of the representative American colonies might have seemed to children, not necessarily the children of 1607 or 1733, as it may be, for, save in the case of one or two colonies, material for such precision of delineation is utterly lacking, but to the child mind rather than the adult mind. I have aimed at historical accuracy except in regard to the language employed. To sprinkle the pages with seventeenth-century phrases would have been a simple matter; but to reproduce with any degree of verisimilitude the familiar parlance of the children of three centuries ago would have been impossible. It seemed wiser, therefore, to trust to modern English and not attempt what must at best have been only an unsatisfactory imitation. Book Description
Excerpt from Child Life in Colonial Days It is my hope that children as well as grown folk will find in these pages much to interest them in the accounts of the llfe of children of olden times. I have had this end constantly in my mind, though I have made no attempt, nor had 1 any intent, to write in a style for the perusal of children; for I have not found that intelligent children care much 'or long for such hooks, except in the very rare cases of the few great hooks that have heen written for children, and which are loved and read as much hy the old as hy the young. Book Description
Excerpt from Colonial New York To tell this story of absorbing interest in simple language and in large outlines, that may be comprehended by children in the seventh and eighth grades, is the purpose of this second volume in a series of monographs, or studies in colonial history which the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Ohio have undertaken to publish for the use of the schools. The first study, Colonial Virginia, which has been used in the schools of this city since its publication in March of the present year, has demonstrated its value, and has shown the desirability of continuing the work until the story of each of the Thirteen Colonies has been made available in this form.
