This study considered the perceptions of college students regarding the effect of their participation in high school athletics upon their resilience. This study explored the effect of athletic participation on students' academic achievement, capacity to overcome adversity, and ability to cope with stress. This study was conducted in a private, coeducational university in suburban, southeastern Pennsylvania. Seventy-five undergraduate college students who matriculated to this university and attended public, private, or parochial high schools participated. The results of this study suggested that participation in athletics supported most participants' academic achievement, developed their capacity to overcome challenges and adversity, and positively affected their ability to manage stress. The themes that emerged in this research study, when considered within the context of prior research related to protective factors and resilience, suggested that participation in athletic activities promoted resilience among these students.

Student-athletes face a variety of stressors and adversities that become hurdles in both their personal, athletic, and academic lives. This study explores the relationship between resilience, cohesion, and stress amongst community college student-athletes. Community college student-athletes (N=49) completed an online survey using the Group Environment Questionnaire, College Student-Athletes' Life Stress Scale, and Brief Resilience Scale. T-tests were used to compare differences among these variables by gender. Student-athletes reported higher levels of resilience and cohesion, which were related to lower levels of stress. This study illustrates how resilience, belonging, and coach/peer supports help decrease levels of perceived stress within the community college student-athlete population.

Resilience in sport has been defined as "the role of mental processes and behavior in promoting personal assets and protecting an individual from the potential negative effect of stressors" (Fletcher & Sarkar, 2012, p. 675). Fletcher and Sarkar's (2012) found that various psychological factors were indicative of athlete resilience such as achievement motivation, social support, focus, confidence, and positive personality. To date, sport psychology researchers have dominantly examined resilience as an individual construct (e.g., Galli & Vealey, 2008; Fletcher & Sarkar; Wagstaff, Sarkar, Davidson, & Fletcher, 2016). However, it is also important to consider how athlete resilience might develop and operate in relationships with important others (e.g., coach). Narrative inquiry (Smith & Sparkes, 2009) was used in this study to explore the stories of seven NCAA Division I student-athletes' lived experiences of how the coach-athlete relationship influenced their ability to be resilient through major stress. Semi-structured interviews were conducted that asked participants about their respective coach-athlete relationship, how power and sociocultural factors influenced this relationship, and in turn, influenced student-athlete resilience. Braun and Clarke's (2006) thematic analysis was used for data analysis, which revealed the following themes: (a) Student-athlete core resilience, (b) The W.O.A.T., (c) The G.O.A.T., (d) W.O.AT. coach behaviors, (e) G.O.A.T. coach behaviors, (f) The W.O.A.T., the G.O.A.T., and student-athlete resilience, (g) The effect of coach major stress on student-athlete resilience, and (h) The relational shift: From bad to better, good to great. It is hoped that the findings of this study will be used as a powerful method from which coaches can emotionally connect with the participants' stories in order to better understand how they might operate within the coach-athlete relationship to influence student-athlete resilience.

The purpose of this ethnographic case study was to explore and investigate the adult perceptions of the influence or impact that student involvement in high school athletics has on student engagement and student success. Due to the fact that funding for education in California is tied to the state economy, it is continually susceptible to periods of economic boom as well as times of economic recession. The result is that educational leaders have to continually make decisions about what programs to cut or to continue to fund. In times of economic crisis, there is a documented tendency for schools across the nation to cut extracurricular programs in order to sustain the academic curricular programs. This study examines adult perceptions regarding the impact that they believe athletic involvement ultimately has on student engagement and student success in a secondary setting. Through a focus group with parents, a staff survey and semi-structured interviews with staff members, this study explored adult perceptions regarding the impact that athletics has on overall student engagement and success. Findings include the importance of athletics in providing “life lessons” and in teaching xi students skills that cannot be taught as easily, if at all, in the classroom; the importance of athletics in providing a “sense of belonging” or “being a part of a team”; and the role that athletic involvement plays in providing motivation for students to be academically more engaged and successful.

Sport psychology researchers have examined the degree to which youth sport participation leads to positive developmental outcomes. Contemporary findings suggest that these outcomes are more likely to occur when adults intentionally design environments that foster life skills development. However, many of these studies have only examined one adult relationship (e.g. Camiré, Trudel, & Bernard, 2013; Gould, Collins, Lauer, & Chung, 2007; Turnnidge, Côté, & Hancock, 2014) without acknowledging the larger context surrounding interscholastic sport. The purpose of this study was to examine high school student-athletes’ perceptions of how stakeholders in their high school sport-ecosystem influence their life skills development and contribute to their well-being. To consider this system and the power of those who influence interscholastic sport, Bronfenbrenner’s Bio-Ecological Model (1977; 1996) and Prilleltensky’s (2003; 2011) concept of psychopolitcal validity were used as a dual theoretical framework. Seven focus groups and eight individual follow-up interviews were conducted with student-athletes (N = 46) who were members of student advisory councils for three state associations. Participants were asked how others (e.g. peers, coaches, parents, athletic directors, and state associations) shape the psychological factors and political dynamics that promote or hinder their well-being (Prilleltensky, 2003; 2011). Themes suggest that student-athletes’ development could be placed into three depths of life skills development: Resilient Development, Surface Development, and Optimal Development. All depths of development were comprised of two reciprocal subthemes: the relationships of the student-athletes with others, and the developmental experiences. The relationships that the student-athletes participated in were revealed to be the mechanisms with which the student-athletes learned life skills. Specifically, in Optimal Development, representing the deepest internalization of life skills, the student-athletes had Great Relationships that supported their initiatives to influence their sport experience, and meaningful practice of shaping their sport community through Anchored Learning. However, outside of Anchored Learning experiences, these skills learned through sport were not explicitly targeted toward increased civic engagement, which falls short of total well-being (Evans & Prilleltensky, 2005). When stakeholders at any level of high school sport guided the student-athletes in civic engagement, they were fostering deep internalization of life skills and preparation for life beyond sport.

Author's abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between resilience and the academic achievement of at-risk students in the Upward Bound Program in Georgia. The researcher used a quantitative method to collect data for the study. The researcher used the Healthy Kids Survey (Module B) instrument to assess the resilience of participants; it had 33 items on it and the researcher added a demographic section to the survey to collect information about the participants' families, schools, GPAs, and SAT/ACT scores. All of the participants chosen for this study were at-risk students due to their status as low-income and potential first-generation-to attend college, high school seniors in the Upward Bound Program in both rural and urban communities in Georgia. There were 200 participants selected for this study and 91 chose to participate. The researcher found several interesting results. The researcher found that at-risk students in the Upward Bound Program in Georgia were highly resilient and that their resilience was positively related to their GPAs. Also, the females in the study were more resilient than the males and had higher GPAs. Furthermore, urban participants in the study were only slightly more resilient than their rural counterparts, and participants living with both parents were more resilient than students living with one parent. On other academic indicators such as the SAT and ACT, the study found that there was not a significant relationship between resilience and these college entrance tests. However, there were surprising findings related to the participants' performance on these tests. African American males scored quite high on the SAT. Also, urban students outperformed rural students on the SAT and participants living with both parents scored higher than those living with one parent. The researcher noted several conclusions from the study. An important conclusion was that the Upward Bound Program helps to build resilience and that resilience positively impacts the participants' GPAs. Maintaining good grades in school is a major factor in students staying in school and going to college; therefore, educators should promote fostering resilience for at-risk students, especially for African American males. Another conclusion was that rural students need more opportunities to participate in programs that foster resilience. Key factors of resilience programs are caring, and supportive adults, who are interested in the students, school work, and adults who have high expectations for the students. School leaders and educators should seek to create warm, supportive school climates and opportunities for all students to achieve. The implications for the study can be very useful to educators and educational leaders as well as for professionals who work in dropout prevention and pre-college programs in Georgia. Also, the findings in the study can serve as a basis for strengthening parental involvement and support from adult mentors for K-12 students. Ultimately, the findings should provide a basis for promoting resilience in all students, especially at-risk students due to poverty.
