Book Description
Excerpt from College Athletics College athletics are now recognized as a very important part of the life of the college man. Around the sport of the university cluster many of its most cherished traditions, and it is in some ways the very life and soul-oi the esprit de corps or college spirit so much talked about. In fact, the sport of a college re ceives more than its share of attention, and the general public is apt to forget that behind all this strenuousness and this on thusiasm, there is a background of hard study and earnest en deavor that but rarely comes to the surface and which passes unnoticed. The very great attention given to college sport has not been wholly salutary, but, in general, it has resulted in great good by drawing attention to the various sports and by retaining he interest of the students in athletics. The life of the college student is sedentary in character, and on that very account the heads of our universities are right in encouraging college sport along all lines. Some evils have crept in, but the great good and the many benefits to the student body much more than over balance these. The modern college student needs the exercise, and those who do not come out for the teams use the energy and time encouraging their representatives, which formerly they'spent in drinking and other forms of dissipation. No matter how we feel toward sport, it is a fact that college athletics play a great role in undergraduate life and must be taken into account. Book Description
Excerpt from Dartmouth Athletics: A Complete History of All Kinds of Sports at the College Readers of this book should keep constantly in mind three facts which have been very stubborn ones at all times that Dartmouth students are somewhat removed from the large centres of activities, and hence have few opportunities for friendly tests and competition; that her facilities for physical culture have been of the hum blest, and that short purses have necessitated close atten tion to remunerative employment; with these factors duly entering into the account, the record must seem to candid judges a very creditable one. Dartmouth has taken its full share of pennants, and when not able to secure the coveted prize, has maintained a prominent and honorable place in the contest, giving her a high average among the New England colleges in the athletic arena. Book Description
Excerpt from Athletics at Iowa Freshmen are not permitted to compete on 'varsity teams, It is first of all required that they learn how to study and that they acclimate themselves to university atmosphere. The Uni versity is a place for work, for serious effort on the part of the student to equip himself better for later life. The University, in attempting to build up athletic prestige, has kept uppermost in importance the necessity for good scholarship. The man Who is to make good in scholarship and athletics at the University is the man Who in his own heart desires to come to Iowa. The University wants most the student Who most wants to come, and in the degree in which a student is eager to succeed in athletics andin the classroom, in precisely that same degree can he achieve the things Which he sets out to do. The student Who enrolls at Iowa for the purpose of making an athletic team injures both the university and himself. Every year a few high school athletes of. Ability register in the Univer sity and expect, apparently, to be retained as students or per witted to play on Iowa teams regardless of their standing in the classroom. They disappear. Some return home; some remain, but their work is of such character that they are never eligible for athletics. Book Description
Excerpt from The Place of Athletics in College Life: A Plea and a Protest These little papers appeared in the New York Independent for January 25, 1894, and the Forum for January, 1894, and have met with a reception and a demand which seems to justify their publication in pamphlet form. They are, therefore, now sent forth, with the consent of those periodicals in the hope that they may do something at once to justify and safeguard the manly sports of our American colleges. The demand for these papers has been so steady that they are again printed. The original form is retained because it is interesting to observe what reforms have been made and what yet remain to be accomplished. It is especially noteworthy that the taint of professionalism continues to be the greatest evil, and most persistent in connection with baseball. No solution of this difficult question can be reached which does not start from the position that all forms of sport must be the recreation of gentleman in order to be classed as amateur. To play ball for money is not dishonorable, and may be highly laudable. But the man who does it is not an amateur. Nor can it be expected that the boy who seeks recreation in games can compete on equal terms with those who make games a means of livelihood. College games should be limited to those who devote no more time to them than can be spared from the serious pursuit of College studies.
