Book Description
Excerpt from Collections of the Nova Scotia Historical Society, Vol. 7: For the Years 1889-91 Thirteen years nearly have passed away since our society was instituted. The first meeting, with this object, was held on the 2ud January, 1878. After deliberation, it was decided that a society should be organized forthwith. In April of that year officers were chosen, and the society went into Operation under the presidency of the Hon. J. W. Ritchie, at that time judge in equity, who had taken a lively interest in the movement, and who continued his cordial support of it till laid aside from active duty by failure of health. The society was formally inaugurated in June, 1875, at a meeting held in the assembly room of this building, when the Rev. Dr. Hill presided in the absence of the president, who, owing to illness, was unable to attend. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. As well as sense, persuades. Be it, then, the mission of this Society to gather and preserve 'these materials. We should not willingly let die the memory of important events of which our land has been the scene, or with which its name has been associated. Book Description
Excerpt from Collections of the Nova Scotia Historical Society, Vol. 20 "The care which a nation devotes to the preservation of the monuments of its past may serve as a true measure of the degree of civilization to which it has attained," (Les Archives Principales de Moscou du Ministere des Affaires Etrangeres Moscow 1898, p.8). "To discover and rescue from the unsparing hand of time the records which yet remain of the earliest history of Canada. To preserve while in our power, such documents as may be found amid the dust of yet unexplored depositories and which may prove important to general history, and to the particular history of this province." - Quebec Literary and Historical Society. National Monuments. Count not the cost of honour to the dead! The tribute that a mighty nation pays To those who loved her well in former days, Means more than gratitude for glory fled, For every noble man that she hath bred, Immortalized by art's immortal praise, Lives in the bronze and marble that we raise, To lead our sons as he our fathers led. These monuments of manhood, brave and high, Do more than forts or battle-ships to keep Our dear bought liberty. They fortify The heart of youth with valour wise and deep, They build eternal bulwarks, and command Eternal strength to guard our native land. - Henry Van Dyke.
